Umm this is the sports tab. The geek tab disappeared a while ago.

What do they think, if they take a long time to make the move they know they should make after years of study it makes everything more dramatic? Staring at the board for an extra 20 minutes per move will provide dramatic insight that wasn't there before?

Of course they're exhausted. Chess is a blitz game delayed by a staring contest. Stop staring at each other and get to it.

You don't play real chess either.  It takes time to think 25 moves ahead.

I'm actually eating dinner right now and there are at least 3 chessboards within 5 feet of me. And no I'm not talking about the kitchen floor that is my wife's workplace.

They should have gone to penalty kicks.

Magnus really should be a Fark hero. He's known to get drunk and play online tournaments under an alt handle.

It's a competition, there is a winner and a loser, it takes a great deal of effort - it's a sport.  Now, it's not an athletic event I'll grant you that.

Don Gato: They should have gone to penalty kicks.

There actually are rules about the chess equivalent of "overtime" and "penalty kicks" for the match as a whole. If after the regularly scheduled games, the score is tied, they play 2-4 game matches at increasingly shorter time controls, and eventually they get to a point where they have an "armageddon" sudden-death tiebreaker: one game where black has less time, but claims the championship on a draw.

I was watching this game live and honestly I think it may go down as one of the greatest in history.

Magnus sacrificed his queen pretty darn early for both of Nepo's rooks and calculated the end game like only he can.

Magnus is the GOAT.

Um, no, crossword puzzles are not a competition (normally) - there isn't a winner and a loser.  You probably think trump is a truthful person don't you.

Since you're bending the rules of sports, the competitors are the New York Times.  The opponent is the public.

Oh look, it's this argument that's happened in every chess thread on Fark.com ever. How refreshing. I'm sure one of you will convince the other that they're wrong with your brilliant and brand-spanking-new insights into this discussion that no one has ever thought to have before.
