(Spokesman Review)   Okay, stop me if you've heard this one before: A sovereign citizen says, "Campaigning for governor counts as court-ordered community service." Anyone care to tell the idiot that's not how the government works?   (spokesman.com) divider line

He might have an argument, in that political campaign organizations are exempt from income taxes, under 26 USC § 527.

It seems likely an unfortunately unsound argument, as organizations exempt from income taxes under 26 USC § 527 are not the same thing as organizations generally exempt from taxation under 26 USC § 501(c).

I thought "sovereign citizens" didn't recognize any form of government or authority. This guy is a moron, anyway.

We live in a post-fact world now. Objective reality no longer has the influence over the minds of American citizens as it used to.

That's not how the penal system works either.

No, Subbmitter.

When the Trump family appeared at the RNC in 2016, Ivanka's speech included a line taht her "father has made many sacrifices to be here." From all the other speeches, it wa clear they meant he was sacrificing his successful position to take a huge step down in authority and influence as the president. What was interesting was that no American media mentioned that. The USA has, long ago, decided that the president is an employee of wealthy private businesses.

I love how sovereign citizens have enough internet savvy to watch a bunch of videos telling them the magic words to use with encountering cops and judges, yet none of these people have enough gumption to go a step further to see how every one of them who casts a spell ends up in jail.

I actually thought he was sentenced to do community service and was campaigning for someone else, which almost makes sense. His own campaign? Nope.

Officer P. Barnes could tell him.

First off, you can't explain anything to a SovCit.

Secondly, the person who is convicted of the crime doesn't get to choose their community service.

I know I would have picked something more fun than washing ambulances in the sun.

In fairness, Mitt Romney was asked about having five boys and how come none of them served in the military, he actually said that they've worked in his campaigns and that counts as a service to the country.

Sure that sounded incredibly stupid. But better to deflect by saying something dumb, than admitting that as a rich fark, he discouraged his kids from joining the military. It's dangerous and best left to the poor.

Is it a cruel or unusual punishment to make this guy walk home while two cops follow him on foot and kick him in the ass every three or four steps?

Why shouldn't he try this? He's gotten away with pretty much everything else so far. Even attempting to subvert democracy by terrorism AGAIN only got him a few hours of community service.

....why is a sovcit trying to become a part of the government of a state within the US?

Like, how does that work in his pointy little head?

2021-12-03 7:10:45 PM
So what?  He illegally grazed his cattle on public lands and was the leader of a gang that came to an armed standoff with federal troops.  He was connected to the idiots who took over a federal wildlife station for a month.  His penalty: attention, public speaking, the respect of legions of idiots, and a gubernatorial campaign.

So he blows off some community service, big deal.  This guy is fairly immune to consequences and he knows it.

His sons weren't old enough to be conscripted, so, why ask that question?

Because the choose an education outside of the military, yes?

I find that characterization totally insulting to the character of the people of the great state of Louisiana!

Also fairly accurate. After having lived in several states, I almost miss the just open graft and corruption back home. You could just count on it as a cost of doing business, everyone goes home happy.

It gets these idiots off the streets when they act on what they've watched and are arrested, and once in a while, we get to see a bailiff taser one of them, which is always delightful. Why do you want to ruin that?

Also, lying your ass off to make stupid people do stupid things is permitted under the 1st Amendment. Tucker Carlson orders his audience to die in agony they can't imagine. The SovCit videos just get idiots arrested and shot by cops.

6 months probation and 200 hours of community service, not to mention the cash payment I had to bring to the PO every time they called. Which could be as little as once a month or twice a week, all taken care of and expunged from my record for $172.74......give me graft.

I wrote the check directly to the re-election fund. I thought the 74 cents was a nice touch.

Got community service in Slidell, LA.  Trash detail in the public parks.

Talk about the tragedy of the commons

Cut a deal with them. Campaigning counts but only if they win. Otherwise they're delinquent and are tossed in jail.
