This is why I keep a methed-up gorilla in the house. If a bear breaks in, he'll regret it.

I only have to wait until winter for the gorilla to freeze, then I can use the house again. What's left of it, anyway.

Sounds like a promising market for grizzly urine, black bears are instinctively terrified of grizzlies, might be related to the whole grizzlies-eating-black-bears thing.

Now I just need a few grizzlies and a steady supply of collectors...

We've had a black bear in our yard for about two months now. We're so used to it now we just walk by him and go about our business. At first we yelled, stomped our feet, lunged at him with a shovel, and carried bear spray at all times, but at this point we just accept that he's around and try not to surprise him.

He has shown no indication of wanting to break into the house.

This will lead to smarter bears, and is a slippery slope to them supplanting us as the dominant species on the planet. When the Bear Empire of Tahoe is crushing the last vestiges of human resistance 10,000 years from now, this dude is going to be to blame.

It's probably an electric fence charger you would buy for horse fencing, people people often have them connected to barns where the fence might start and end.

Have these people never heard of farking deadbolts and metal door frames. I have a hard time believing a bear is going to break through a steel entry door with a 3" deadbolt into a metal frame.

Or are people literally just leaving their places unlocked? I'm so confused by this.

I can understand wood framed doors with tiny 1/2" hardware screws like the above video, but god damn, ya'll know metal frames are standard in most of this country where robberies happen slightly more often than median rates.

We've had a good run. I think it's now a question of "Do human politics directly translate to bears, or are we going to need to question our affiliations when considering which party will eat us?"

No way you'll ever get the black bears and the grizzlies to compromise, the polar bears are just arseholes and all the pandas want to do is get on TV...

You're assuming the unincorporated areas around Tahoe have building codes.

Yes, NV has them, and I'm sure the builders followed those, but if something isn't prohibited by code, you should be okay.

Still liable if it goes bad, but it doesn't sound any worse than a cattle fence. The "wires" need to be that thick because a bear would just tear through the regular cattle wire. From the pics, it looks like you can just push the wires/bars off their mounts, so getting out isn't a problem.

Since so many people have these installed, the locals know to be wary of them.

Exactly, and those are definitely not intrinsically safe since they're a spark/ignition hazard. Whenever a wire on mine gets too close to the ground or there's a wet stick leaning on the bottom wire I can hear it from 30+ feet away. Snap! Snap! Snap!

Finally, why not just have it be an outswing door?

It's code here for garage doors to be outswing so if your car asplodes it doesn't blow up into your kitchen. A door resting against a frame is going to be near impossible for anything short of dynamite to get through.

Two young bears tried to raid my trash cans last night.   I just ordered a second lid strap as they can still pry the corners apart with just one.   Working on a permanent trash enclosure in the mean time.    One of them took an interest in me before I shooed them off.

""Doors flex," Lyon said. "So [the bears] know if they push hard enough, they just flex it until it cracks."

Lyon sounds like a fake human name a lion came up with just to smear the good name of bears so they get more flak about being apex predators. Shameful if you ask me.
