He wasn't selling his time, he was selling his social capital. And considering he's spending it on satellites to monitor atrocities in Africa, I'm not going to complain.

Unruffled as the silver hair on his head, Clooney leans forward, as if he is about to confide in me. "Well, yeah. I was offered $35m for one day's work for an airline commercial, but I talked to Amal [Clooney, the human rights lawyer he married in 2014] about it and we decided it's not worth it. It was [associated with] a country that, although it's an ally, is questionable at times, and so I thought: 'Well, if it takes a minute's sleep away from me, it's not worth it.'"

El Al Israel, then.
Maybe someone will accuse him of being anti-Semitic.

Good answer.
Or maybe Saudi Arabia, whatever their airline is.

It's nice when you have enough money to turn down even more money and it doesn't affect a single aspect of your life and I'm glad to see he realizes he has the power to make changes and spends his money on attempts to change the world. It's futile, but a gold star for trying nonetheless.

Not to brag but I was once offered $35 to leave a movie theater.

True story, apparently it costs more to project "For The Love of Benji" to two little brats than it does to not air "For the Love of Benji" to two little brats.

We didn't take the money for some reason.  Mostly likely because of some incredibly insightful and ethical reason I couldn't quite formulate in my elementary school mind that in no way involved just having an excuse to completely run amok with my friend in an empty theater while "For The Love of Benji" played in the background.  I do know that it wasn't for the love of "For The Love of Benji."

As a kid, he's a little shiat. As a college student he's a massive shiat. As a graduate he's an alcoholic shiat who deliberately gave a friend books that he hoped he would hate.

Only time I like him was in the prologue. And yet, I stand by liking the book.

I just didn't want to be associated wiht a country whose world image is not all rainbows and puppy dogs.

I think that would probably have a greater net effect.

I've wondered how much the money is, for actors doing commercials after they've hit the upper levels.

Adrien Brody doing a Diet Coke campaign after his Oscar.
Matthew McConaughey doing Lincoln after his Oscar.

So apparently it's in the 10s of millions.

$500 million. So he's sacrificing a new score of 6% of his current wealth on moral reasons. I think most people would do that. The scale shouldn't matter too much.

I disagree.  I think most people would put morals aside to get 7 percent of their total net worth for 1 day of work.  In fact, I'm guessing a significant percentage would do it for 7 percent of their annual salary.

Most people need most of their net worth to pay rent, eat, pay for healthcare, etc.

For MOST people, a 7% increase in net worth is substantial.

You can't say morals like  all setting aside is the same. An airline commercial isn't exactly contributing to a dictatorship.
