Meh. Let him. Florida won't be able to raise enough money to provide any sort of decent compensation or acquisition of equipment. It will end up being retirees who can't let go of the military and out of shape y'all Qaeda types in a disappointing reboot of Dad's Army.

He's already encroached on our right of peaceful assembly, which for now is stayed by the court.  Now he wants a private army.

Maybe if we give them a SA, they won't feel the need to form a SS?

Genius thinking.

I think the military gives away hardware it considers 'surplus' to help defense contractors sell new equipment to sit on a lot somewhere.

So they will probably be well equipped for cheap.

Democrats in Florida immediately expressed alarm at DeSantis' announcement. US Rep. Charlie Crist, who is running as a Democrat to challenge the governor in 2022, tweeted, "No Governor should have his own handpicked secret police."

Well, guess who just made the enemies' list - I dunno.  Everyone who voted D.  Get them.

State's rights!  Let's pass the law, build the secret police and let the Supreme Court approve, er, debate it.

Looking forward to a border incursion with Georgia's Secret Police Force.

Nobody is vested more in the death of Donald Trump than Ron DeSantis.  If Trump doesn't die by 2024, then Ron gets to be mocked and ridiculed and then lose the primary to Trump.  I'm actually looking forward to him being called "Little Ronnie".

"Civilian Military"

Words have meaning people. A civilian is someone not in the military. If you are in the military you are not a civilian (that does not mean you are not a citizen). This is a militia, or a paramilitary organization, potentially unlawful combatants depending on how it is done, but there is no such thing as a civilian military.

This is why it pisses me off that it's become so common for cops to refer to citizens as civilians. No matter how many neat toys they now have, they're not the military; just citizens like everyone else.

Of course they are not military! The military has standards and can follow the law of land warfare: cops do not and cannot.

As long as the trade off is a series of deep restrictions on firearms in Florida including banning ARs unless you're a member of Mickey Mouse Militia.

This is a set-up for exactly what we all know is going to be. Save the time skip ahead put them against the wall

Not do defend the idiocy of this idea, Desantis, and Florida in general, but why would that be the case? They have the legal right to this. Unless you're also planning to cut off all Federal funding to the other 20 states who have state guards, including right-wing shiatholes like NY and CA.

I read the headline and I'm like wow that's creepy, then you get to this part of the article:

The Florida State Guard was created in 1941 during World War II as a temporary force to fill the void left behind when the Florida National Guard was deployed

And I'm like a little less creepy but still seems like finding some loophole to have this personal militia.

Then you get to this part of the article:

If Florida moves ahead with DeSantis' plan to reestablish the civilian force, it would become the 23rd active state guard in the country

oh, so this is actually nothing, thanks for wasting my time.

It takes lots of money and parts to maintain those vehicles, if you go around and look at all those donated vehicles, they sit rusting in a parking lot. Florida doesn't have a state income tax, they do not have the financial bandwidth to build, maintain, and project any sort of serious fighting force of their own.

A State Defense Force is nothing more than a glorified Boy Scout color guard. Connecticut's is the Governors horse guard who show up to parades and nothing else. This isn't going to be some elite fighting force. At best they'll be a ceremonial unit.

Quit wetting your pants over political virtue signaling.

You do understand that I am not arguing against the state having a militia or military, simply pointing out the fact that by definition and legal requirements there is no "civilian military" and posting a picture of states with defense forces does not actually disprove what I said right?

Civilian literally means not military.

My issue is not with a state defense force but the idiocy of not using words correctly.

Because this is how you get the idiocy that is the current state of "law enforcement" in the USA.

But it will legitimize those who were discharged who, not so much "can't let go of the military" but left the military because it didn't recognize how awesome they are (or refused to stay because how much bullshait the military is), Meal Team Six and Y'all Qaeda types.

And that's what people in those groups want more than anything else, legitimacy.

I love being a pedant also. And I also never said they weren't military.

I love how so far these people are either active full time military OR just a bunch of Rascal Riders part time.
