You may not be able to judge a book by its cover, but it can certainly make you interested enough to pick it up off the shelf and check it out.

The expression dates back to the time when printing and bookbinding were separate professions. The printer sold books as stacks of printed pages. The customer would take the stack to a binder to be completed.

The stacks put out for sale had a blank page on top of each to protect them from dust and sun damage. It's the ancestor of the flyleaf in books today. That's the cover that the expression refers to.

True. And none of those at all caught my interest.

I used to work in video stores growing up and Thorn Emi/HBO video had the worst cover art.
They would just take scenes from the movie and slap them on the cover, so whether or not the movie was good, they all look like garbage with those covers!

I lasted 3 slides. Sort of - closed the window without really reading the third one. You did well.

well assuming the cover artists did their job, then the cover art should in some way inform the viewer about the book's content. Otherwise what's the point of paying for art on the cover? Or if we as the viewers can know its probably not honest about the content of the book, just marketing bs. Then we do better to explicitly ignore the cover art entirely.

I say that the point of cover art is to allow at least some initial judgement on, i might be into it/i'm probably not into it.

If I wanted to read, I'd go to school.

I liked some of the covers, they felt very retro 1970s. The book about the stay at home who thinks she's turning into a dog...I want to read that. I like weird lit like that.

My Seventies flashback was even more severe, as my initial reaction was, "Wait! New Directions is still in business?"
