But they dare not flipflop on the issue!

They don't care.

2021-12-02 4:12:06 PM
Go ahead and shut it down. That means people staying at home in the middle.of a pandemic.

2021-12-02 4:41:34 PM
Yeah go for it, GOP. Voters love it when you shut down government to show you can throw another temper tantrum when your bullshiat doesn't line up with reality. We'll be fine.

The last couple of times I actually needed to interact with a Federal Agency, the government had been shut down by GOP intransigence.

Don't worry subby, it will all disappear like magic.

Give it about 2 weeks.

Shostie: They don't care.

Even if Omicron weren't here, "shutting down the government and not paying thousands and thousands of public servants weeks before Christmas" had the optics of a cartoon villain already.

As you say, they give not one fark. They are what they claim to be: civilization killers.

Why is this a hill they are willing to die on.
The Omicron variant should have been enough reason let it go.

Some of them probably care.  Susan Collins cares, I'm sure of it.

Hahahahaha!   just kidding.  I am so high right now.  good shiat.

Obviously Obama lent Biden his time machine and forced the gop to take that stance.

2021-12-02 4:56:43 PM
You know, I wouldn't mind the GOP's performative idiocy and villainy so much if they ever seemed to suffer any consequences for it.

*goes back to sharpening guillotine blade.

I love how Ted Cruz shut it down for 16 days and caught some hell about it until he reminded everybody that the Democrats are the ones who really shut it down, video notwithstanding.  He'll still tell you he didn't do it.

Problem is that their cultists just see a shutdown as STIGGINIT and cheer on as they perceive it hurting the people they want to see hurt.

GOP cultists are short sighted and malicious enough to take a shiat on their own living room floor just so they can laugh at a "lib" making a disgusted face at the smell.

They did it in 1995, too. All that happened (besides Clinton's re-election, which was basically a foregone conclusion by then anyway) was that Democrats picked up a pair of seats each in the House and Senate, not even enough to win back control*.

Sure, public opinion broke against the GOP over it (they ruined Hannukkah, too - the shutdown started on Day 1), but it didn't translate into anything, electorally speaking.

* I realize that even one net Senate seat would be A Big Farking Deal for Democrats (two would be even bigger), but I haven't looked at the open seat breakdown that carefully to see how likely it is

Unobtanium:

The last couple of times I actually needed to interact with a Federal Agency, the government had been shut down by GOP intransigence.

This is a big reason why the general public (especially Republicans) can care less when there are Federal Government shutdowns: they don't interact with the Federal Government so it does not matter to them.

If Social Security, Social Security Disability and other welfare programs were also shutdown during a Federal Government shutdown these shutdowns would never happen.

Why do they have to fark everything up?

Not just this, though yeah this, but in general. Were they not raised right as children? What possible lack of reason and empathy could lead you to thinking this would be a good idea?

SpectroBoy: Why is this a hill they are willing to die on.

Anything they can do to destroy Biden's administration is seen as necessary.

Couple that with the changes being made in many states to guarantee that Republicans are the only ones elected to office and you understand why they feel no shame in doing it.  They won't see any consequences for crashing and burning the nation, so why not doing it?

2021-12-02 5:16:35 PM
Why are the Democrats playing along with this bullshiat?* They have the power to just raise (or indeed abolish) the debt limit and ignore the Republicans entirely. The only reason they "can't" is because of an explicitly white supremacist rule that many of them, and their partisans here, defend with all their strength. Why do so many Democrats support white supremacy?

*I know the answer to this perfectly well, just like everyone else around here, but I'm curious whether the partisans here are capable of even acknowledging the question.

I really have to wonder if there's a mutant virus strain out there that gained the ability to make big political donations.  These GOP tools are doing Covid so many favors.

This actually seems like a rhetorical off-ramp that McConnell can sell to his side as a way to get out of this jam and look like they still did something (that something being the promotion of killing lots of Americans, but I digress).

Unless I'm mistaken, the mandate was enacted by the Executive branch through OSHA and isn't really a legislative matter. I would imagine Mitch and the other R Senators know this and also assuredly know that their voters probably don't know this and will eat this up as anti-liberal red meat.

Whatever works - I'd rather my retirement account not drop 8,000%

The small town where some of my family is a prime example, they keep voting for the same GOP morons things get worse and they blame the democrats. Occasionally it will get so bad they vote in a new GOP moron to fix it. It never gets better just worse but it is the dimmycrats fault.

They've been trained to see anything related to government as bad, so shutting it down is, in their eyes, good.

Hurting people is just a bonus, if they even think about that aspect.

Most Americans voted for Biden.

I mean, I get the Will Rogers joke about not belonging to any "organized party,"  but we've got the numbers on our side to keep the Dems in power, and we shouldn't be suffering any naysaying about it.

It's not the numbers, but the distribution that's unfortunately the issue.

Last time they shut down the government I was coming back from Nassau. Customs/BCP is at Nassau and you come back on a domestic flight. Literally one lane out of 24 for non-Bahamians was open, and the line took over three hours. Planes were leaving multiple hours late because literally none of their passengers were able to make it to the gates on time. On the other side I'm sure people were being told why the plane and crew was multiple hours late to come pick them up to start their Caribbean vacation. All the grumbling I heard was correctly laying the blame on the GOP.
