Without stupid shiatty rules the Senate might actually function.

I won't be the least surprised if McTurtle isn't able to get his caucus to go along with the debt limit increase and we head for default yet again.

Mainly due to the fact that Trump is telling them to do so, so of course they'll listen to him. And with all of the things the Republicans are doing to make sure they stay in power, they're not going to suffer for doing so either.

Because the founders didn't foresee a situation where a member of the Senate would want to shut the whole thing down over a meaningless number.

This isn't a constitutional thing; a simple majority of Senators can change Senate rules at any time.

Only if it is by accident. None of these morons wants to lose their cushy job. They fark this up and they're out in the street. Hell, they might need bodyguards in their to make sure they live long enough to clear out. We default and there is going to be a shiatload of fallout, and it isn't just going to hit them durty demonrats. Heck it would probably negatively affect their own wealth to the point that they would be terrified, no matter how often they posture about this bullshiat.

Schedule ONE public vote in each chamber to push the debt ceiling out to Nov 4th, 2022.

Each vote is done live on CSPAN: 11AM ET for the Senate, 1PM ET for the House.

Each Representative, or Senator, is required to STAND AND VOICE VOTE when their name is called. Well, Madison doesn't have to stand for the obvious reason.

Blocking the voice vote, possible in the Senate, will only be possible if you stand and filibuster live on CSPAN.

We'll make it easy and do it alphabetically.

There are only two responses allowed: Aye or No.

This is late enough that most people will be awake, but early enough it will hit the markets live and make the lunch / evening news.

Watch their performative bullshiat end when they realize there's only ONE public Voice vote without comment.

It's not stupidity. It's not.

It's stubborn, arrogant, pride. Refusing to admit wrong doing. Just as it was in General Sherman's day. As it has been carried out through today. Who blame neo-conservatives as much as they blame dems who think progressives are Stalinists on the fringe of politics.

whidbey: Why does the Senate have so many stupid shiatty rules?

Because they've been adding to the rulebook for over 200 years.
Senate rules are agreed to by a majority of Senators at the beginning of each session.
They can be altered, updated, or repealed by a majority of Senators at any time.

Normally I'm of the opinion that they should keep talking about that and making moves towards it, but if you take that shot and miss, you're worse off than you were before.

This time?  It makes perfect sense.  You have McConnell all but begging his own party to be *remotely* sane.  Throw him an olive branch.  Get your people in line, or we're going after the few sane members of your party to break the filibuster and prevent economic disaster without you.  And if WE fail, YOU get to wear that albatross until and unless WE manage to unfark things on our own.  If you want to be in a position to be speaker if your asshole party can get back in power, this is your last chance.  This gets to be your party, or Trump's, and right now you're losing.  Balls in your court, shiatbird.

Why? It still scores them mucho points with the slobbering idiots in their base. It's not like anyone is actually going to do anything about it from the other side either.

There's no downside. They've already run off most people with any sense of shame and passed a shiatload of state laws to make it legal for them to steal elections.

Seriously. I'm so sick of this. The Democrats need to push to remove the debt ceiling altogether. This two months at a time bullshiat has gone on long enough. If we're negotiating with the GOP, we start with "debt ceiling is over" and maybe... MAYBE... we negotiate down to "funding is guaranteed through February, 2024."

What I don't understand is how any senator can simply declare "FILIBUSTER!" and block everything.

The filibuster is literally someone standing up and speaking for as many hours as he/she can before getting tired or losing voice... THEN, it's over and over everyone can go back to the business of governing.

Simply declaring "FILIBUSTER!" is not a thing and should never have been allowed in the first place.

It became a thing when old people decided they didn't have the stamina to speak at length for hours on end in order to delay the bill from being voted on.

NathanAllen: The way we do Government shutdowns only encourages bad behavior. If it shutdown military pay and Social Security this would never be an issue.

This one might, especially because of the timing.

Since the holidays eliminate half the available weekends in December, the overwhelming majority of the Guard and Reserve are scheduled to drill on Saturday. If government does shut down, drill will be cancelled. That's about 500,000 consumers and their families missing a check right before Christmas.

I don't have a LOT of faith in Democrats to pin that solidly on Republicans. But at least some reservists will see it for what it is.

Really, I kind of want them to refuse to approve it and Biden to issue an executive order saying that the Treasury will make good on all of America's debts regardless of what Congress says. That he will no longer tolerate the country being held hostage by the Republican party.

That should be enough to reassure the borrowers and the Republicans would have to launch lengthy lawsuits demanding that the US default on its obligations anyway (and the bad press that would generate), while the Democrats just ignore the issue and go on to other things.
