I've been playing Cyberpunk 2077.  I've gotten through enough of it to go through a range of emotions on it.  At first, I was overwhelmed by the amount of content available, and that actually made the game harder to enjoy.  I fell into the Skyrim loop of just going to the map point with the densest collection of map markers, clearing them out, and moving on to the next densest part.  That was boring and I couldn't follow the plot.

Then, I decided to role play the game harder.  So, I stuck with 2-3 storylines until I played them through, and picked up new story lines.  That made the game more immersive, and a lot more fun.

But then other things started to come to the surface.  You don't really have a lot of choice in the game.  Missions have basically the same outcome whether you do stealth or no stealth, go lethal or non-lethal.  Conversation sections are mostly on-rails.  You notice the bugs more when you're more tuned into the missions.  Later missions seem to have less polish than earlier ones.  Your organized crime missions involve going somewhere and killing everyone.  The assault in progress missions involve going somewhere and killing everyone.  The assassination missions involve going somewhere and killing potentially everyone.  The sabotage missions involve going somewhere and not necessarily killing everyone.  Etc.

I'm still having fun, but the main draw for the game is still the potential for what it may yet become, and not especially what it is.

Still just grinding thru the new Skyrim AE content.

As for holiday themed game, Maniac Mansion on NES. At least I believe it to be a Halloween game.

2021-12-02 12:39:13 PM
Still going through Skyrim again. I think I'm at level 33 or something, working on polishing off some of the small miscellaneous side quests and exploring more.  Finally got enough enchanted gear that my magicka replenishes ridiculously fast -- at least, when not in battle anyway.  Seems slower while in a fight, but much faster than normal anyway.

Favourite holiday-themed game ... haven't played a ton of those but I think I'd have to go with Xmas Lemmings.  It's just a classic.

I got a submarine in GTA online, which contains a mission that produces a crap ton of money.  I ran that job a bunch last weekend and got pretty rich in game.  So now that I can buy anything I want, I kind of lost interest a bit.

My gaming group decided to play Red Dead Redemption online, so I have been playing that this week too.  In a lot of ways I like this one a bit more.  Its slower paced, less chaotic, fewer hackers/griefers and playing with a posse makes things pretty fun.

I also completely revamped the cooling on my case this week.  I added and re-positioned fans, changed up fan and voltage profiles on my video card, and added a cardboard insert to direct air flow better. The results were very good.  The video card now maxes out a 69 (nice) degrees in most demanding games, a far cry from the 89 that it was getting up to before.  And the only part of my case that gets hot now is the part with all the exhaust fans, so I assume I did it right.

I can't think of a single Christmas themed game I enjoy.  Lots of horror/Halloween ones are good.

My RDRO posse... (I'm on the left).

A bit of Loop Hero but I think I'm missing something somewhere since I'm not really advancing (I mean, I think). Trying to get in a bit of Phoenix Point, but I rarely have an hour+ to dedicate to playing it. It's not bad so far, but I'm early in the game still. And still playing a match or two of WoWS.

As for the question... Would Frostpunk count? There's snow.

I am but I'm not lol.

My wife has asked me to get parts for her to get a new gaming PC as well. :D

She has a little prebuilt Lenovo Thinkcentre M92p with a i5-3550 and 12 GB of RAM. One of those where you have onboard graphics and the PSU is so weak you'd have to put in a low profile RX 550 as your upgrade option.

Ouch.  Wait.  12GB?  Is she running an odd number of DDR sticks, or an even number of differing capacities?

Either way, yeah, I think it's time she gets an upgrade, too.  Assuming you can luck out twice and find another halfway decent graphics card.  :)

More Final Fantasy XIV.  Made it through Shadowbringers, still have to do the patch content.  Endwalker launches in about 10 hours, so...I'll be trying to play during team building.  Also Forza Horizon 4, and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.  The randomizer in that is fun, just wish the Switch version didn't run like garbage.

Not a lot of gaming this week though I hope to squeeze in a few hours on Chorus when I pick it up this weekend. My biggest PC thing is updating my laptop & seeing how little it actually gets used atm, this might take a while.

I know all too well about expenses.  Too bad about the graphics card.  Happens all the time, and these days, especially for graphics cards.  CPU shouldn't be hard to get your hands on.  Plenty of Ryzens around.  I'm seeing YouTube channels like Necroware actually diagnosing and fixing previously dead video cards at the component level because everyone wants a video card, even an older one.

For the last few weeks I went back to The Commonwealth and Fallout 4. And realized fairly quickly, that my building skills had atrophied badly. A few mods, and some better planning has made the whole thing a lot better--although, the random crashes are still an issue after all this time. But, my settlements are coming along nicely, and with populations that have been soaring to the point of needing to build upward a lot. I still give my settlers mini-guns and much more firepower than they should probably have, but if raiders keep dropping the damn things, why shouldn't I give them to the poor sods?

It's still Fallout 4, which means the missions are kind of vanilla, Preston Garvey still talks too much, but all that building means that my character just hit level 94 before even getting into the second act. Just finished Far Harbor, and am contemplating just getting on with the story missions, because it's time, I guess.

After an exhausting stretch at work and a comparably exhausting Thanksgiving with my entire family staying at my house, I broke down and bought Cyberpunk 2077 for PC, since it was half off during the Steam Thanksgiving sale.

I'm enjoying it. Driving on a keyboard is very clunky, but no bugs worth mentioning so far. Fairly classic Gibsonian "Heist that's too big and goes sideways" plot. Don't know if I'll start a new game when DLCs come out eventually. Might not have been quite so sanguine if I'd paid full price.

Still lots and lots of Slay the Spire. I am marveling at the fact that I am still learning even though I've easily put in 100 hours. At first it was just learning the game, then learning how to build decks that work well together; and now here at the end learning just how powerful a lean deck is.

Sure it's fun to have a crazy shiv deck as the Silent, but it is wild seeing infinite combo decks in action, even though I haven't achieved one myself. My most recent Watcher run was very close to an infinite using rushdown, but I never got the relic that actually made it truly infinite and lost to the Heart.

Some folks suggested Monster Train as a follow up, but I just didn't enjoy it.

Ryzens are great overclockers.  I have a Ryzen 7 3700X, which under load never passes about 70°C with a +100MHz boost overclock, and the thermal max is 95°C so I have tons of thermal headroom to push it higher if I want to.  But I don't really want to; after my experience with the FX9590 running so damn hot all the time even with a good liquid cooler causing the package substrate to eventually start melting (and that's without any overclock) which eventually caused system instability and freezing, I think I'm going to let my system run cool.  I'm only using the stock Wraith air cooler right now, but I do have a liquid cooler I should probably attach.

I've been bouncing between Dead Cells and Inscryption. I think I've found a decent combo in the latter. Squirrel cards with the totem that gives me a free draw to play, use it to summon a Death Card that can be sacrificed over and over, use that and the squirrels to summon Amalgams and Pronghorns. Unless it's a boss battle, I can often win in one turn.

Chernoblyite is pretty good, it has a slow-ish start, but it gets good. Note! And this is important.

When you DIE in that game, the game is NOT over. It takes you to a place that you can change decisions that you have made in the game. This is a requirement to get the best ending for the game.
