It's odd to say that galactic mergers didn't bring much (percentage-wise) to the galaxy when you can't really tell.  When we merge with Andromeda we will be the minor partner and we have no way of really knowing if that has been the case in the past.

Sol system bobs up and down in the galactic plane. I'd think that makes it likely we were absorbed into the Milky Way at some point. Goddam our galaxy needs a real name.

Additionally, what if two galaxies that have very similar orbital planes merge?   That'd be harder to detect.
