Observe one close enough and they'll demonstrate a fondness for eating humans, as well.

polar bears are quite carnivorous, not sure why they're surprised. Guess because it's going after something more terrestrial than usual?
Those things will eat basically anything they can catch though. Follow them long enough you'd probably find 'em eating two of everything on the planet. the noah's arc of food.

The way that some of these scientists capture the bears for study is really fascinating.

Because of the mostly carnivorous diet, polar bears are often starved for other nutrients like those found in green vegetables. A cheap and easy bait then is frozen green peas.

So what the scientists do is dig a large pit in the ice, and then scatter the peas around the edges.

When the polar bear comes to take a pea, they kick him in the ice hole.

Polar bears are very selective about what they eat.

They only eat what they can kill, or find dead.

And are one of two carnivores that will hunt and eat humans every time they get the chance.

See, it is a common hunting technique for bears if it happens this often.

Close, crocodiles.

Others may accidentally kill a human and then feed, or take to human predation because of physical condition, but polar bears and crocodiles will eat you every time they get the chance.

Wife is Canadian and has relatives "out West" who like to hunt and hike, and they all carry large caliber revolvers everywhere they go when they're in the woods. Even sleep with them. Specifically because of polar bears. Brown bears or grizzlies may be bigger, but polar bears have the personality of wolverines or honey badgers. They load them with absolutely insane rounds that push the physical limits of the handgun, because shooting at a hungry or pissed off bear is like shooting at a pickup truck barreling down on you, moving about as fast, and there aren't any trees to climb or places to hide out on the tundra or ice.

Well you'd probably want to say crocodilians, as alligators would as well. However the point is still wrong, as the correct answer remains "rich humans."

Predators who taste human tend to become man killers because we're unnaturally salty.

That doesn't sound very selective.

What's the third choice?

They won't eat meat when offered since they didn't find it themselves?

A moral compass and desire not to impose on others must be what separates polar bears from Yogi bears.

The best day of a polar bear's life is if they are the first to find a beached dead whale. They won't have it to themselves long, draws every bear from miles around, the one time they are too busy to fight.

Or eat each other.
