And so, as Tiny Tim said, "You fat pigs disgust me, filling the Merry Christmas void of your lives with all the slop you can inhale; God damn you, every one!"

Outraged! I will NOT be attending your so called "celebration" because you can't seem to wrap your head around my perfectly reasonable vegan-keto-raw-macro-bioluminnescent exclusive-sustainably sourced-fungivore dietary needs!

Usually, I just avoid these occasions altogether but, after the separation of the past couple of years, I am feeling a lot of pressure to attend family occasions. How do I make Christmas bearable? Is it OK to ask that people tone it down a little? Should I just bring a few light dishes that I like? What's the etiquette for letting people know that their traditions are kinda gross?

I'm having a hard time believing that.

It's a feast.  Cultures have had feasts for millennia.  It's not meant to be done every day.  That's what makes it a holiday, Caitlin.

At our family get togethers we have two people with gluten sensitivity, two people doing Weight Watchers, I'm on Keto, an alcoholic that really doesn't eat anything, and a vegetarian.  Plus some others that eat whatever is in front of them.

We solve the problem by having a variety of things available. Everyone brings a dish that they can eat with enough to share.

It's not that complicated. The point is to be together. The food is secondary.

Actually turkey dinners do completely suck. Why not make something good? Ribs are good. Pizza is good. Fried Chicken is good. WTF do you enjoy bland dry weird protein that looks like it was grown on mars for astronauts?

she shouldn't feel compelled to attend.  no one, and i mean no one, wants her there anyway.  that day or any other day.

No great story starts with 'while we were eating our salad and water...'

1) Carrot Juice Is Murder: STFU and GTHOI or don't go.  Those are your options.  I would suggest the latter.

2) Mama, Didn't Mean To Make You Cry: STFU and MYOB.

3) This Really Isn't About You, Just About Me: Tell your friend to STFU and GTHOI.  Shiat happens.

4) We're A Happy Family, Me, Mom and Daddy: You're not happy, he's not happy.  DTMFA.

5) So Tell Me What You Want, What You Really, Really Want: I would have expected this exclusivity talk earlier than 9 months into a relationship.  But I suppose we chalk that up to not asking questions we're afraid we won't like the answer to.  Which tells me you probably want to DTMFA.

1a) Carrot Juice Is Murder II: So conceptually this works, but I expect there'd be more than a small amount of pressure to partake in the feast.  So again if they are gonna have trouble grinning and bearing it, then I say don't go in the first place.

2a) Bohemian Rhapsody II: Well, I wasn't going to accuse mom of attention whore behavior myself, but was thinking it.  Now that it's published in the column, yeah, I definitely could see it as less real ideation and more attention seeking behavior.  Don't know enough about the dynamics in this case to be even 50% confident, but would not come as a shock if it was manipulation.  So I stand by STFU and MYOB.

Oh, they're "feeling pressure to attend", all right.

It's coming from inside their head.  Their inner asshole is stressed because they haven't been able to harangue people in person in a long time.
