Freddy Got Fingered will be discovered again hundreds of years from now and be hailed as a Dadaist classic.

True. I usually find Tom Green amusing, but that movie is a disaster.

tl;dr: "Reality is so grotesque that this movie is finally cool now, right?"

I'm not getting anything waxed for that

This movie is always wild to me that it caught people off guard. Like, you gave millions of dollars to TOM GREEN, and then gave him zero restraint...I can't imagine people were surprised that the result was some weird, unhinged shiat. Seen through that lens...it's weirdly more enjoyable than it was when it came out.

I still remember an incident in high school Calculus class, we were talking about movies of the time and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon came up. A point was made that the movie was good because it was exactly what the director wanted to show on film. My retort was "so was Freddie Got Fingered." Laughs were had.

Only because they'll think it was intentionally absurdist, not the stupid attempts at sketch comedy by a hack.

1) I'm glad I never saw it in a theater.
2) Still felt ripped off when I rented it on VHS.
3) Foe those of you who are under 30, ask your parents or grandparents what VHS was.

The movie is not made for the audience, it's made for Tom Green.  The character on the cover isn't Gordy, the protagonist, it's Tom Green the director.  The character is framing up the audience: Gordy is an artist, not a film maker.  There's even a shot in the restaurant with a man with his hand in a cast, with his middle finger stuck up, pointing at the audience.  It's the cast literally giving the audience the finger.

I'm guessing Tom Green found it very funny, which was all that mattered to him.  And he probably found the fact that somebody gave him millions to make it absolutely hilarious.  I just wish he'd been able to make his planned sequel, "Freddie Got Fisted".

There's people now with their heads up their asses that are trying to say this was art. They like throwing out words like "Dadaist" when referring to a gross out comedy.

Honestly.  20th Century Fox gave this man $14 million dollars to make a comedy about his younger brother being fingered by his father, titled "Freddy Got Fingered", with apparently no one at the studio reading the script or looking at dailies.

Rip Totn must have really need the money to be in the pile of shiat.

And if 9/11 never happened, this would have been the worst thing that happened that year.

During the late 90s-early 2000s, raunchy comedies were in demand. Fox was coming off a massive hit with "Something About Mary" and Tom Green had just gotten decent reviews for his part in "Road Trip."

They probably just figured "what the hell?" and took the gamble. If the movie had been good, they look like geniuses, and if it sucked, they only put up about $10 million to make it.

A $14 million budget for a studio movie with a nationally known lead actor and a nationwide release was a safe bet in 2001. Even if it didn't make back all its money at the box office, Fox would make its money back selling VHS and DVD copies to video stores, and marketing it to the same high school and college students who watched the Tom Green MTV show and Jackass.

Video stores used to pay about $100 a copy for VHS tapes of studio movies. In 2001, Blockbuster alone had like 10,000 stores in the U.S., and when they had a new studio flick, they'd have at least ten copies on the shelf the first few months.

As someone who often does and says things more to amuse myself than others I fully support TG's ability to make money doing it.

I have never seen this movie, and only remember it because I saw somebody in a comment thread here on Fark, make a photoshopped movie poster that said "Freddy Got A UFIA". For some reason, I laughed like crazy over that and still think it's funny.

He had a moment, didn't he?  I thought his show where he relentlessly antagonized his poor father was funny.  He does well in supporting role in Road Trip, dates Drew, gets his own movie and....plummets to Earth, rarely to be seen again.

I haven't seen FGF but the authors are right in that you can see his influence on other shows--first, Jackass and more recently Eric Andre.

My theory has always been that Tom Green had some really damning blackmail on the studio heads and so they agreed to give him $14 million for a movie and promised not to interfere, knowing full well that left to his own devices, he would crash and burn hard.  Seems to have worked out well for everyone.

At the time, Hollywood comedies were going through a gross-out period. The Farrelly brothers had kicked it off a few years earlier with their surprise smash There's Something About Mary, and Adam Sandler and American Pie carried that torch further. The stealth appeal of these movies was the way they mixed bodily fluids (yet ironically bloodless violence) and tasteless jokes with just enough heart to win over audiences.

If you're reading articles about shiat like this, then yes, you probably are nostalgic for Tom Green.  That's your problem.

/Also--IT'S AN AD

The best movie Tom Green has ever been in was Charlie's Angels.

Charlie's Angels was a fun, silly, mindless action movie and the girls were really likable, but because he was dating Drew Barrymoor she let him do his Tom Green schtick in the middle of it and it was jarring and out of place in the middle of that movie.

and I would say Eurotrip was a much better movie than Road Trip.
Well, maybe not better. More fun.

I think we need to thank Tom Green. Not for the horrorshow of a film he created, but for the fact that Tom was the pop-up Turkey Timer for us all, regarding now.

I posit that Tom was a predictor, that he knew which way the wind was blowing with what was coming, and through god knows what, we got this schittshow of a movie that dragged us all into a stupefying torpor.

He tried to warn us all. And now we're here.

Everybody can quote "Daddy would you like some sausage?"

Nobody can quote a single line of dialog from Schindler's List

Therefore, Freddy Got Fingered is more culturally relevant than Schindler's List
