Sadly, world cup qualifiers use goal differential as a tie-breaker.  This kind of result isn't exactly surprising.

Yeah, but 20-0 is sorta overkill.  How badly does Engerland expect to get thrashed by Sark to think it needs this in the bank?

That first one has to be the shiattest graph I have seen in a while.  The range is 5 inches, but makes it seem like Latvians are storm giants to India's gnomes.

That graph makes me laugh because of the notable absence of Dutch women that would seemingly be twice the height of the Latvian women.  The scale of the graph is so ridiculous even without showing 6' tall women.

I seem to remember there was an entire chapter about this in How to Lie with Statistics.

Four hat-tricks - from White, Lauren Hemp, who scored four, Alessia Russo, who scored England's fastest ever hat-trick in the space of 11 minutes, and Beth Mead - were added to by Jordan Nobbs, Jill Scott, Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Jess Carter and two from Beth England as the Lionesses ensured White's record-breaking match would be one to remember as more records tumbled, debuts were made and first senior goals were scored.

England's fastest ever hat-trick wasn't by England because England only scored twice. Got it.

All the other teams in their group get to play Latvia as well, you think they won't run the score up?

Fark that noise. If you're the goalie on a national team, you should have at least the ability to keep from getting scored on more than Subby's mom on coupon day.

remember it's amusing when soccer teams run up the score, it's an insult to the universe if it happens in basketball or football.

yeah, that's why just about every comment in the article was saying how much of an embarrassment it was for the team to run up the score and celebrate it...

8-1 to austria was latvia's worst defeat other than england

30-0 between the two matches vs. england

and england is so much better than the rest of the group they won't have any threat

their results so far:
20-0
10-0
10-0
4-0
1-0

it's more that the women's game is only good in a few countries, and is semi-pro in a lot of places. latvia is a part time team.  like a premier league team playing someone in the 6th tier

Which is almost always a "give a damn" issue.  If the nation won't support women's teams, there is generally very little chance they will do well.  Russians are generally ignorant of the fact they even have a women's team - and it shows.  While Engerland, Froggyland, and the Dutch Oven spend money and work to build their women's presence.  And the US Title IX has definitely paid out dividends - my friends refer to "the US soccer team" and "the men's team", for instance.

The big counterexample is Brazil.  If you look at how little Brazil puts into their women's team, you would be appalled - I would be genuinely scared if they put even a quarter of their men's budget into the women, considering what the women already do on three cans of beans and a broken button per decade.

Top four in the last world cup, top two in the last Euros and only lost that on penalties. That is a very good result.

there seems to be a high correlation with respect for women in the countries.  places that think women need to be in the kitchen instead of on the pitch aren't going to put any money towards the teams
