That was a really good movie, I don't see them making it better.

We don't know who might star in this movie, since it will be hard to fill the shoes of Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes in any performance

I'm guessing Timothée Chalamet and Michael B. Jordan.

It was a great movie that fit perfectly in its time.  Definitely portrayed some racial strife but in a believable and still funny way.  It is where it belongs, and I don't need a new version.

And Rosie Perez in that ratty tank top in the hotel room.... ooh boy.

Suburban kids who like to take a boombox to the park and shoot hoops with their bros aren't listening to Jimi much these days, and likely are fine with not being able to hear him. Hopefully whoever writes the screenplay for the remake takes that into account, no matter how much that bums out Wesley and Woody.

I don't know why you need to remake this.

It's a perfectly solid movie already.

Don't. Just don't. It's not going to work.

White Men Can't Jump was at best, a 2-star premise for a movie that the cast turned into a 4-star sports movie classic. The chemistry between the cast and the humor was lightning in a bottle.
Besides, in today's era of Twitter outrage performance art, a movie where a highlight is the trash talk is going to suffer.

That movie was perfect the way it was. You can only make it the new Karate Kid if you mess with it.

This worked out so well for Red Dawn. And Point Break. And Robocop. And Total Recall. And Ghostbusters. And Karaye Kid.

I probably missed a few.

They can make a DIFFERENT movie with the same name, but if they play the same beats, it won't work. It's like trying to remake Tin Cup. Or Bull Durham. Some sports movies work because they are "of a time" and they don't work now.

I'm rewatching it now, about 15 minutes in, and I can't see how you can make this movie today. It plays on stereotypes while subverting them at the same time. Today, you couldn't get away with using the stereotypes as shorthand for characters at the beginning. People would get offended.

I was thinking they could flip the narrative and make it about a trans player.

Not sure we are there yet. The whole movie is about trash talking stereotypes. On what planet do you think that would work?

The whole Jimi Hendrix thing with Wesley Snipes in the original felt forced. I didn't buy Sidney Deane as a Hendrix guy. That just seemed like a Ron Shelton bit that he wanted to get in there.

As for those saying this couldn't be remade today, I disagree. I don't think it's a good idea since the original still holds up, but stop with this nonsense that shiat like Blazing Saddles could never be made today. You're buying into the cancel
culture bullshiat.

"Most users" usually drive the Twitter outrage train. The busybody church ladies who used to call for boycotts of books, music, and movies in the 90s have been replaced by their so-called progressive grandkids who reflexively whine about how "problematic" everything is.

I'd definitely watch the remake if these folks could edit out that vile Rosie Perez and replace her with anyone. Hell I'd take that Bobert coont over Rosie Perez. She makes my blood boil.

This.

Really enjoyed the movie when it came out. But in today's weird-ass environment, I don't think you can even retain the title let alone remake the whole movie.

The irony(?) of that movie was that it was clear that Wesley Snipes had never played basketball in his life, while Woody Harrelson seemed like he probably started on his high school team.

Look at what the Ghostbusters remake became - the director using a few hundred Twitter trolls as proof that any criticism of his shiatty movie was rooted in misogyny, despite the fact that the even original cast couldn't have made that movie decent.

I couldn't care less about that, but studios do, and they have to sign off on shiat.

I certainly could be wrong, but I highly doubt that a remake would come anywhere close to capturing lightning in a bottle like the original did.

Also, it just doesn't play as well in 2021 to have a mildly racist, but loveable farkup character as one of the leads you root for. The way the race issue as portrayed in the original fits the time period much better and is rather central to the story.

Miles Teller: I listen to Drake.

Michael B Jordan: Yeah, but you don't HEAR Drake.  White people can't hear Drake.

MT: Hey I can HEAR Drake.

Selena Gomez: Isn't Drake's producer white?

MT:  Hell, it looks like half his crew is white!

MBJ sighs dismissively
