I agree with the article. Every year- EVERY YEAR - the first snow fall proves that at least 1/3 of us totally forgot how to drive in winter. So many stupid accidents, so many close calls

And so many people on bald summer tires with a frosted over windshield....

no matter how bad or long winter is in an area a significant percentage of people just can't seem to remember how to drive in snow once winter ends.

WTF?  I thought I escaped this type of thing by going due North from south of the Mason Dixon line to roughly as close to Canada as I could get without swimming.  But all it means is that people are similar to souther drivers - except that southern drivers don't have enough snow to "remember" how to drive on snow.

/granted, I lived in Maryland
//so they drive like Maryland drivers, on snow [the horror.  Although NoVA drivers on snow are likely worse (more aggressive.  MD drivers are oblivious)]
///luckily many of them stay home, but you are still a target if you can drive on snow

Idiocy is part of it but not the only reason.  The first snow fall is the worst for black ice with ground temperatures warm enough to thaw the snow and air temperatures freezing it on top.  Some still have summer tires on and some people have a new vehicle that they have never driven in the snow and it may act different.  Idiocy still gets the largest percentage but not necessarily 100%.

It's not just Canada, it's everywhere with snow.  Idiots forget how to drive at the first sign of inclement winter weather as if they forgot that snow was a thing. I've seen it every year, and I will keep seeing it every year into the afterlife.

'The cops are busy tending to citiots & their cars in the ditches. We can sled on the roads & go to Timmy's for a double-double.'

'Just the drive-thru. I'm banned froms interior dining due to inappropriates farting.'

'Do inappropriate farts linger in a snowmobile suit? That must be an unpleasant experience peeling the thing off at home.'

The real proof that many of us are idiots is that we are always surprised by the first snow. And many are delighted like when they were children, especially fans of Winter sports.

A lot of the accidents are people who don't buy snow tires, even in the depths of January and February.

All cromulent reasons in this thread.

But I will add, the ploughs aren't out yet and the road salters haven't spread salt and grit yet. The first day of schools is always the hardest, even for the teaches and janitors.

Holy sh*t, all of the world's best drivers, in a single Fark thread. This is amazing, put me in the screenshot.

Not to mention, most of our recent immigrants are from countries where it never snows. If you've never driven on ice or snow before, you have absolutely no conception of how slippery it's going to be.

My dad always used to hit the brakes hard at the end of the driveway and up the street (once it was clear) to gauge the feel for it. Actually kind of makes some sense

I do that.  Hit the gas a bit to see how easy the tires will break free also.

Today in Pte. Claire, Quebec (on the island of Montreal).
One photo shows the height from which the car plunged.
The driver walked away with minor injuries.

Except the plows are out.  Sodium is useless if the sun isn't out, or the ambient temperature is less than -23c.  As for sand, 10 cubic meters doent last very long.  Source:  am a highways plow truck operator.  Biggest source of accidents in my experience?  Stupidity, youth, and incorrect tires are the top 3

Yup. The photographer is a friend of ours. She was very proud to have her work in a paper
