This was a good week for the WFT. :D

Short week, and a trip, for WFT though, will be interesting how the season ends.

The Steelers should have fallen way more than 2. I would have dropped them 4-5. They have gaping weaknesses (to put it lightly), and responded by doing even less to correct them.

There's a difference between "sputtering" and "not being used", Mr. ESPN writing head.  Cleveland doesn't win games giving it to Nick Chubb a mere 8 times.

Stefanski needs to get over his Baker-as-Messiah complex and remember what brought him to the dance in the first place.

I'm loving watching NE right now. The whole season is house money, this was supposed to be a bridge year. And it feels like 2001, which is fricken sweet!

A Pats/Bucs superbowl would be hilarious. Some households up here would be divided like never before.

They need to beat an equal team on the road with equal in-game turnover margin.  They just leave too many points on the field by kicking field goals.  Understandable, given the 10 week old quarterback.

At Buffalo and at Indy should tell us how far this thing is going.

I must say, it's a very strange feeling when I'm SAD that the Cowboys DROPPED to #10. However, I'm very HAPPY to watch Seattle crash & burn. Burn, baby, burn.

Change from Week 1 to this week:
One 20-point drop: Seahawks
One 19-point jump: Bengals

One team is WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE! The Vikings are back at their Week 1 Ranking. AND WE LET 'EM OFF THE HOOK!

Change from last week to this week:
One 7-point drop: Rams
One 7-point jump: Broncos

5 teams did not change rankings: Lions, Seahawks, Bears, Giants, & Jaguars

Number of times rankings have changed:
1 team has changed 3 times: Lions
2 teams have changed 12 times, or every week: Vikings, & Broncos

Difference between high rank & low rank:
Lowest fluctuation: Lions with 2
Highest fluctuation: Seahawks with 25. Sad.
Average fluctuation is 11.7

2021 Fluctuation has now surpassed 2020's year-end Fluctuation of 10.8.

Most spots traveled (largest overall fluctuation):Colts with 51

Teams hitting their highest rank this week: Colts & Patriots
Teams hitting their lowest rank this week: Bills & Seahawks,

SIX teams have held the #1 spot: Chiefs, Bucs, Rams, Bills, Cardinals, & Packers

I only recently realized my Sundays are wide open until after Christmas. Monday night game, bye week weekend, Saturday night game, Christmas weekend (and that Bills game on the 26th is going to get moved to Sunday night, I'm sure). My weekends have been so booked I've been recording 1PM games and watching later fast forwarding between plays.

These night games are a blessing and a curse - I'll get to see the games live and not worry about spoilers.  But I'll be frustrated waiting 30 seconds for every play, 15 minutes of halftime, minutes of commercials in between possession changes, etc...
I'll be asleep before the 2 minute warning unless I start doing crack or something.

A three way tie for 1st with 3, Lamar could have been the 4th had he lost. Ben squeaked out the victory, as he only scored 1TD and took just enough sacks to edge out Jalen for the jockstrap of suck.

Our old friend Cam made the board again, good to have you back again sir.

The top 10 has continued to shift, and David Mills has finally been overtaken after weeks of not playing. Lots of 1st and 2nd year QB's in this list for this year, but a few surprises like Goff, Matt Ryan and Carr on that list. Remember these stats only apply to losses, and it appears that Mr First Round pick, is off to a stellar start in Jacksonville.

Yay. My weekly trash-the-cowboys-position thread is here and i get to point out that excluding their wins over really lousy teams (phi, nyg, atl) they've not won by more than a single possession (avg 5.3 points). The only team ranked over 15 that they've beaten is the Patriots who had an unsteady start. They'll be fine, as they only have one opponent ranked above 20 (!) left, but want to get this in anyway.
They'd really have to shiat the bed to end up with fewer than 10 wins - and that's exactly what I am rooting for.

/ and yet, my team is worse

Every game the Ravens play is like that. I am a Ravens fan and I have no idea how they are on top of the AFC. They constantly do just enough to win a game but only that much and no more.

Consider the 3 losses are to the Dolphins, Raiders, and Bengals. How...WTF? We won our first superbowl in a similar way but there was a consistent defense. There's nothing consistent about the Ravens except winning.

Congratulations to Hillbilly Jim for winning the FXC Eliminator. We were both eliminated in Week 12 (Dallas lost, Philadelphia lost), but Hillbilly Jim's picks had a larger margin of victory (187-128).

I still think I should have been eliminated with the Steelers/Lions tie in week 10, but them's the rules.

Bills are the best defense, still, and it isn't even really close (these are adjusted).

Fun fact that I saw on the Twittersphere today:

The Lions are always welcome on the PLOT though. I might keep them there year after year just to see if they ever get out of that corner.

Continuing to tweak format for clarity - this week I've taken out most of the scalar lines, leaving only the .500 victory line and the Mean Strength of Schedule lines. But I've added standard deviations to the trendline in keeping with my overall over/under-performance scheme. The logos have been shrunk to reduce overlap, and their trails have been faded to reduce clutter. Not sure about Seattle's dirty little menage-a-trois in the cellar with the Jersey teams, but I suppose as long as it's consensual....
Fark user imageView Full Size

As the tails show, the Strength of Schedule is collapsing inward as more teams have more opponents in common. After Week 18, any pair of divisional rivals will have 12 common opponents, three unique, and two games against each other.

Ranked by performance relative to the trend:

Los Angeles Chargers
Kansas City Chiefs
----- +2 SD -----
Green Bay Packers
Dallas Cowboys
----- +1 SD -----
Las Vegas Raiders
Baltimore Ravens
Arizona Cardinals
Minnesota Vikings
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tennessee Titans
Washington
New Orleans Saints
Cleveland Browns
San Francisco 49ers
===== TREND =====
Chicago Bears
Pittsburgh Steelers
Seattle Seahawks
New York Giants
New England Patriots
Philadelphia Eagles
New York Jets
Los Angeles Rams
Indianapolis Colts
Denver Broncos
Cincinnati Bengals
Miami Dolphins
Buffalo Bills
----- -1 SD -----
Houston Texans
Atlanta Falcons
Carolina Panthers
Detroit Lions

Strength of Victory. So if a team beats 5 teams, it takes the win percentages from those 5 teams & averages them. The Lions have a win percentage of .045, but an SOV of 0. If I had left the Lions on the chart, the other 31 teams look like they're all squished up against the right-hand side.

Agreed. And I'm not sure I like the single-datum axes - the lack of scale makes my brain twitch. The thing is, the mean and SD for the Strength axis change from week to week, so whichever way I draw the verticals, part of the data will be misleading. The Falcons look like they were out in the sub-basement nearly 4 SD below the trend but they were never contemporaneously that far below the pack.

I'm not sure I'm reading this right, because it looks like Jags, WFT ,Chiefs, and Chargers also have positive EPA/rush. Also, is there significance of the red axes, or is that just kind of centered?

The Cows have an infuriating ability to play to their opponents. It doesn't matter the coach or the players on the team they will strive for mediocrity.

Sadly I have the infuriating tendency to understand this and to know that I'll claim I'm done being a fan after 30 years when they lose the first round of the playoffs. In reality I'll be super excited next year and watch them do it again.

Sorry, Lions. Had to launch you out of the chart. You were skewing the entire thing. Win something & you can come back on the chart.

What does "sov" mean?

Strength Of Victory.

Speaking of additional stats:

Bills are the best defense, still, and it isn't even really close (these are adjusted).

Fun fact that I saw on the Twittersphere today:
"The Jets are the only defense that adds positive value to rushing attempts by an opponent" that means that every running play increases EPA (expected points added). Yikes.

Now do the only defensive stat that matters-points allowed. We'll find out who's who this Monday!

OK. The Pats have allowed 8 more points than the Bills with one extra game. They are virtually identical. The difference is that the Bills have more turnovers through 1 less game, and are less 1 in the total turnover +/- (9 to 10) in one less game.

Given that the bills have the least yards allowed and the least points allowed I would lean more in their direction. Wouldn't you?

I would say they're pretty much a dead heat and the Bills D is definitely good, but if you dig a bit deeper the Pats D over the last 5-6 games has been lights out where the Bills have been trending the other way. It will be an interesting game and even being the Pats homer I am, I would not bet on this one.
