The puppy's person didn't try very hard getting him out. If he got in, he could get out.

Had fun playing dog whisper helping a friend retrieve her new dog that was running around the neighborhood, repeatedly dodging her. Drove over with my dog, let him out of the car, and before I could turn and ask her where she'd last seen her dog, he came running up to meet my dog.

(He was a popular dog. But not as popular as the next one that had girlfriends all around the neighborhood. Including the ultimate conquest, sisters, that would visit the house, stand at the front door and bark for him to come out.)

First thought - "What kind of homeowner does not own a screw gun?"

Second thought - "It's called s-t-e-a-k - dogs even know how it's spelled and will wake from a coma to eat it!"

Third thought - "Iowa - yeah, scratch those first two thoughts."    <<ducks for cover>>

Indeed. Dogs are good spellers. My mother had a dog that hated flea baths, subsequently learned how to spell flea. It was fun to see guests come in, the dog go nuts jumping on them, the looks on their faces when my mother would announce: "She's got fleas!" The dog instantaneously diving under a couch.

If you read TFA, he was wearing a leash and the leash got tangled under the beam where the puppy was. You can see it when the firefighter pulls him out from under the deck. He got in and then got stuck. And he was in a harness, so he couldn't pull free.
