Die Hard is not a Christmas movie... It's more of a Festivus Film.

The Night Before never gets much love on Christmas listicles, but is absolutely hilarious. Seth Rogen tripping balls in a Catholic Church while wearing giant Hanukkah sweater is worth it alone.

You might be right that this isn't that thread, but Die Hard is absolutely a Christmas movie.

Can we at least give the author credit for acknowledging films made before their lifetime, for once?

I'd add "Fatman" to that list. Saw it this weekend and it's now in regular rotation.

Santa Makes an Appearance.

The whole movie literally takes place during a Christmas party.

The soundtrack includes several full on Christmas songs as well as classics woven into the motifs of the score.

Gifts are exchanged, granted some explode.

There is at least one miracle, the FBI.

It is a tender story of an estranged couple reuniting on Christmas.

Where's Tim Burton's Batman? If Die Hard is a Christmas movie, so is Batman.

2021-11-30 11:49:50 AM
Glad to see "The Nightmare Before Christmas" on there as it's one of my favorites. However, I'd like to nominate the old black-and-white "Our Vines Have Tender Grapes" from 1945 for an honorable mention even though it isn't specifically a film about the holidays.

With a script by the great Dalton Trumbo and amazing performances from Edward G. Robinson, Agnes Morehead, and especially young Margaret O'Brien, there's just something about the movie that always strikes me as having the same kind of message as "A Christmas Carol" even though the moral of the story isn't as immediately apparent. The scene near the end, where O'Brien gives her prized calf to the poor farmer whose barn has just burned down, and inspires the rest of the community to pitch in with what they have to help him too, gets me every time. Nobody has any money but they all offer what they can. It's a beautiful moment.

"Ice Harvest" made it (which is good) but not the Alastair Sim "A Christmas Carol" or the Preston Sturges "Christmas in July."? The only reason I can think of is that even critics have quit watching B&W movies. The 2nd best version of "A Christmas Carol" is the one with Reginald Owen -- his conversion from miserly to generous is the most believable and happiest in the bunch. I like the Sims movie better because it's Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is the scariest.

"The Thin Man" is better than either "Lethal Weapon" or "Die Hard" and is far more saturated with Christmas stuff. Nick picks off ornaments with an air gun, frgridsake. "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang" is more saturated with Christmas stuff than "Lethal Weapon" and is far more fun.

Any list that includes the original "Miracle on 34th Street" and the Alistair Sim "Christmas Carol" is not a fail, no matter what else they include or omit.

Damn, I had forgotten about The Thin Man. Excellent call. My parents loved that movie and I grew up watching it on VHS. Many years later, I watched it in college and realized "Wow, Nick and Nora are totally drunk throughout the entire film." Made it enjoyable on a whole other level. I should add it to the list.

OK, not really.  Invasion USA is bad.  Real bad.  The Russian or Soviet or whatever terrorists shooting rocket launchers into Christmas trees is a nice "shooting the dog" bit of evil.

Cobra, on the other hand is so bad it's good.

I've said it before:  Just because it has some Christmas elements no more makes Die Hard a Christmas movie than the fact that Kathy Bates gets naked makes About Schmidt a porno.
