Smugglers used to employ larger vessels, but the Triad gangs that control the waterway.. have discovered that speedboats allow them to better evade authorities.

Smugglers have finally found Miami Vice on Netflix

China's population in 1975: 926,240,885
China's population in 2020: 1,439,323,776
China's median yearly income in 1975: 580 CNY ($91.12)
China's median yearly income in 2020: 90501 CNY ($14217.71)

Their population increased by over 50%, and their median income increased by 15,623% (!) between 1975 and 2020. The fact that their meat consumption increased 1236% in the same time frame isn't dramatic - it's screaming "wealth inequity," because prices increased accordingly even as their rich became incredibly richer but their poor didn't change very much.

an aim to satisfy the country's growing appetite for beef, pork, and chicken.

So are they trying to say that Chinese didn't eat beef, pork or chicken before, or are they saying that they finally ate all the dog, cat, snake, turtle, panda, monkey, and duck that was there in the past and have to branch out now?

begets the question of exactly how long has this been going on... since at least 2015, apparently.

which implies a helluva lot longer than that. so, are there like frozen-meat-laden ghost freighters sailing around the East Shina Sea for the better part of a century? buy low, stashing newly misbegotten meats into the lower holds; and sell high, skimming 20-30-40-year-old meats out of the upper ones?
