All hail the Xenobot Dynasty!

So self replicating nano-machines controlled by an AI? That's a potential double bingo on my board if it plays out.

Also
The study authors discovered that the machines can gather hundreds of single cells and assemble them into "baby" Xenobots. After a few days, the offspring evolve matureto look and move just like their parents.
The progeny can then repeat the process over and over again, perhaps with mutation and selection, thereby evolving.

"That may evoke terrifying visions of self-replicating robot swarms, but the researchers envision more optimistic outcomes." Marvelous, your optimism is naïve at best. Every military, oligarch with a private army, and unsavory organization on the planet is watching with interest.

That's cool, and could do some amazing things to benefit humanity, until General McEvil or some Bond villain decides to weaponize the technology and then hello sci-fi dystopia.

/ I get why so many young people are choosing to not have kids.

Computers do that on purpose because it's their thing.

Pro tip: try blowing in the USB port before starting (like old school Nintendo), your computer will go soooo much faster and smoother after that.

So the issue is they cannot move on their own, and the "offspring" don't grow and are always smaller than the original, meaning in a few generations they are too small to be viable anymore.

The Ars Technica article was better, but this headline was better so...

Not content with COVID variants, scientists are actively inventing new ways to end all life on Earth. All it takes is one programmer to accidentally use bitwise instead of Boolean logic and BAM! Gray goo.
