Department stores were sad that they weren't making ALL the money.  But then they realized they could sell stuff to Jewish people in December, too.

So I really wanted to add, you know, a mythological hero that Jews could call their own, hence Nate Gadol.

Sounds like a knock off to me.

The holiday is the same time of year, the menorah looks like lights on a tree, you get presents,it's close enough for me not to buy different cards.

It's not?  Damnit, it's to late to cancel those holiday hams I ordered.

Only if that's your attitude towards it.

So I was doing a little cybermonday shopping and a couple items on the best buy site were flagged as "In stock, arrives in time for Hanukkah!". Has this been a thing in ecommerce for a while now or are they charting new territory here?

Department Stores were by and large a Jewish phenomenon, founded by and run by Jews.  I can't help but wonder if some of it was wanting to include their families in the "Christmas magic."

And sell to their kinsmen too, of course.

Anyway, Chanukah is a holiday about hoping and praying, against all odds, that the oil won't run out... all while burning lights you don't need, teaching your kids to gamble, and eating deep fried pastries.  It should be the American national holiday.

Should I have spent more time studying primitive superstitions? My bad.

Hanukkah may not be Christmas, but we can still sing Hanukkah carols.

I used to work with a bunch of Orthodox Jews. Unlike other holy days, they would try to outdo each other as to how little they paid attention to Chanukah. Definitely blowback to the Jewish Christmas concept.

My manager, who is a naturalized American citizen but an Israeli jew, called it Jewish Christmas the other day, so there.

Yeah. Duh. It's the Jewish Eid, where they light candles like Diwali.
