To steal from David Hume, which is more likely: that Freddie Mercury's guitarist is anti-LGBT, or that a British showbiz hack should tell a lie.

However, we need to delve into the real reason the Britt Awards are doing this

To save money on trophies

STUDY IT OUT!

I am struggling to grasp at any possible straw, and really hope this was some tabloid hack who caught him off guard, asked him a very loaded question with almost no facts, and then paraphrased him in the worst way possible.

God I don't want Brian f*cking May to have turned into a typical Old White Man©

adding that Freddie Mercury was from Zanzibar and therefore "wasn't white as such" but "nobody ever, ever discussed it" or questioned whether he was "the right color" or "the right sexual proclivity." Now, he says, "it's frightening that you have to be so calculating about everything."

I know what's he's saying.  He's saying, Knock it the fark off with all these categories.
Which I agree with and say myself.  It divides people, not brings them together, or creates "inclusivity" as they always claim.  No, what it does is point out that you might be BEST, but you're still only the best gay guy who sang that song, or the best rap artist who is white, or the trans person who "passes" the best. You might not be THE BEST, but all these categories make for more sales, because you can tap into every special interest group there is.

So.

Yeah, these kinds of statements got Al Campanis and Jimmy the Greek canned, and that was way before the Interwebz.

I am now and will forever be more offended by the worst song of all time:

Bicycle Race

It wasn't his song but goddammit anyways

So if you have ever wondered, Queen is just ok why am I hearing them constantly? It's because Brian May went on a crusade in the early 00s to make it known that his band was the best band ever, and he was the greatest guitarist ever. He is also not into the gay side of Freddie, so he uses his old singers charisma, but tries to downplay the obvious.

That said, it worked. He sold Queen songs to everyone looking to buy a 70s pop song for a commercial. And it worked.

Queen was just ok.

Freddie Mercury was better than Queen as a whole.

Brian May was just so so on guitar. Not nearly as good at guitar as FM was as a front man.

Queen was great for about a 7 year run. Astoundingly great for about 4-5 of those.

May is a brilliant musician, using his handmade guitar to create audioscapes unlike any other (listen to the "jazz band" jam at the end of "Good Company" and realize it is ALL done on electric guitar. Amazing.)

Freddie was a singular talent vocally, and one hell of an instinctual songwriter. He has a great flair for melody and arrangement and was unite a good pianist as well. He definitely was NOT better than Queen though and he knew it.

Queen was a true example of the whole being better than the sum of its parts though, as Freddie's terrible solo record and May's continued debasing of the band name with Adam Lambert and no John Deacon shows.

With that hyperbole he would be right at home here.

Mr. Bad Guy, his solo record, was released in 1985, which is after the bell curve of great creativity for Queen and its members had already been on the steep downslide.  And, as I mentioned, Queen was much better than any of its parts.  Brian May's solo stuff, Roger Taylor's solo stuff, Freddie's solo stuff...none of it holds a candle to Queen in the highest point of their creative bell curve.

If that was the case, why were their songs blasting at sporting events in the 80s?

As much as I hate  Brian May for selling off Freddie's music for TV, movie and commercial use, I may (pun intended) agree with him.  They just eliminated 50% of eligible winners.

Jack Sabbath:

As a lifelong Queen fan, I have to say that I hate that their music has been turned out for every kind of stupid ad, up to and including Lay's potato chips (which I found a particularly puzzling usage), over the past decade or so. But I still love the band. Queen was a very unique group, in that each member was a contributing and talented songwriter. I agree that Queen as I knew it (and love it) included John Deacon and of course Freddie, and what Brian and Roger have been doing without them for me is a pseudo Queen, like the margarine of Queen. Still, I wouldn't want them to stop playing if they continue to enjoy playing together. I just don't accept "Queen + Adam Lambert" as Queen because it's not my Queen. For me, I would rather Queen had continued with George Michael after Freddie's death, if they were going to continue at all. But that ship has sailed, obviously.
