Sigh. Maybe we can kill off some more anti-vaxxers. More people who won't listen to decades of research by knowledgeable folks.

Maybe we can get back to what is correct.

Ahh who the hell am I kidding?

My Dutch work colleagues are already in work from home mode. That airplane from Joburg that landed this weekend where 24 tested positive entering the Netherlands after testing negative getting on the plane is going to send the whole place into full lockdown.

They are gonna be pissed.

What if they have diplomatic immunity?

2021-11-28 10:39:45 PM
Is this the same South African where 10% of everybody on a plane is COVID-positive?

2021-11-28 11:07:58 PM
So i guess the US is going to go through round 3 of mass casualties from people too stupid to realize that a virus doesnt care about your political opinions?

I can't wait for Republicans to some how defund that too.

Glad to see Zeynep with a green light.  She's shown more integrity and a better grasp of fact than just about anyone over the last 2 years.

Many countries have started issuing travel bans, but targeting passports rather than the virus.
The one in the United States doesn't even start till Monday (viruses don't work on the weekends?) and isn't paired with testing or quarantine at the border-just a blanket ban on a few nationalities.

Nice.  It's like we're having a travel ban just so we can say we had one.  Again.

2 F-ing years. Billions of doses administered. And still these Fs aren't getting vaxxed. LETS GET THE GOD DAMN DART GUNS!

2021-11-28 11:26:24 PM
More or less unrestricted travel in a world-spanning population of billions apparently gives diseases too much opportunity to evolve and spread, especially when large hunks of those populations actively undermine public health efforts to control pandemics.

The real answer is to make quarantining travelers S.O.P., and accept that even if you can fly half way around the world in under 24 hours on a commercial jet... you're going to spend a couple of weeks in quarantine when you get there before you can mingle with the locals.  And repeat the process if you return to your point of origin.  Without exception, even for the rich.

And that also means adding a disinfection stage to all international cargo that could conceivable have a live virus or bacterium on its surface, and not allowing ship's crews to go ashore outside their home ports.

Yeah, it's pretty f*cked up that everyone's giving South Africa the middle finger -- they're on top of this whole genetic modeling thing, and then they put it out for free, only to have everything shut down to them? That's pretty f*cked up, if you ask me.

2021-11-28 11:32:09 PM
Well that's great they reported it but yanno... maybe do a bit more to get your general region vaxxed so you don't end up with freaky deaky variants f*cking up everyone's day.

Also... just because apartheid ended doesn't mean it isn't still a heinously evil colonial country poisoned by the greed and apathy of the western capitalistic ideal.

The fact the entire world still dismisses most of Africa (the largest continent on the planet) is, and always has been, a terrible idea.

We should talk about how Paul Simon performed there in the middle of a global boycott. It's not that I'm mad at him, but I grew up really liking his music, and I'm really disappointed. Like, I don't even know if he can still call me Al.

They are the richest and most developed country in the area and are propped up by western interests.

They should have been doing projects to help educate their poorer neighbor nations (like build some schools and tamp down misinfo from the missionaries or superstitions or old paranoia about previous mistreatment from the west) and ALL of the more prosperous nations should have taken it as an opportunity to properly develop and stablize those regions...

Not for profit but for humane reasons and to AVOID SH*T LIKE THIS!!!

SA is still wicked racist and segregated.

Just not nearly as bad and literally codified into law anymore (mostly).

The way I figure at this point, our best case scenario is that enough of them commit suicide by virus that they become a permanent national minority.

But I don't expect that to necessarily happen. At least, not as fast as it would need to.

Eh, don't freak out.

I don't blame any nation for not wanting it to hit their shores.

Much of the world has proven how goddamned irresponsible and stupid people can be over the past couple years.

Canada ALSO followed suit and yannowhat? Good. Wait until it can be studied.

WHO however is chastising the travel bans because it has already breached the regions being banned and I guess trying to not cause more panic.

Not quite sure what the gambit is there... but yanno, kind of an event in motion at this point.

Stupid friiggen' plague.

Naido: Nice. It's like we're having a travel ban just so we can say we had one. Again.

Yup.  I've seen a bunch of epidemiologists on the twitters saying travel bans aren't evidence-based at all, the absolute best they ever do is slow the seeding slightly, by the time you detect the virus somewhere else you probably already have a handful of seeded cases in your own country and they'll explode soon.  Or, like in January 2020, you ban travel from China, and you just get the virus from Italy instead.

It's a way for governments to appear to be doing something, and to appease both the loud xenophobes and the people who are ostensibly very concerned about the pandemic and demand action but don't truly understand the science.

They're already a permanent national minority, at least in terms of numbers. Unfortunately, our government is set up at the core to give the minority more power, and they've spent decades tipping the scales even further in their favor.

If America had a sane electoral system, the GQP would have been a footnote long ago.
