How do you do illegal gambling in Macau of all places...?

I probably don't want to know the answer to my own question.

This reminds me of how people think prosecutions for crimes like prostitution and drugs will go away if the activities are legalized.  That's not so - sometimes arrests can even increase because there are almost always governmental strings attached and some folks will try to get around those.

Man, I have seen idiots set up 3 card monte tables right out in Las Vegas Blvd. and still have idiot tourists play!

People get into a mentality of how they're in a location that condone ls one type of activity, that all activities must be legal. So they end up doing dumb shiat.

This is a little different from that. The guy accused spends (and earns) millions of dollars flying gamblers in from Mainland China.  Normally, he would bring them to a casino and take a cut of their winnings but China has been cracking down on that. Looks like he may have wanted to make his own mini-casino to keep his junket customers happy.

Alternatively, China is making up the charges from whole cloth to punish someone who opposes them.

The junket thing isn't new.

The root of the problem is essentially that China doesn't want people to leave. Particularly wealthy people who will take that wealth with them. China has in the past allowed people to purchase foreign real estate, but that too is coming to an end (and likely set to crash America's real estate market). A bit catalyst was buy an investment house in America, then get pregnant and have the baby on US soil (or Guam), then have a fast exit out of the country.

But what about your money? How do you take it with you?

Junkets. Deposit money into a casino account in Macau. Then withdraw it in another nations such as Australia where a duster casino property is at.

The Chinese don't like the wealth leaving the nation, and the casinos don't like being used for laundering cash. Hence the crackdowns. But it happens.

"Chau is also a controlling shareholder of Sun Entertainment Group Ltd., a film production and cremation services firm"

Certainly has no problems taking care of people who skip out on paying their debts 😳

Why would anyone run those businesses under the same name?

I think it's an Asian thing. If a corporation buys up a smaller company, the smaller one takes on the corporate name.

That's how you get Yamaha motorcycles and grand pianos.

Would be VERY interesting in the US and other Western to find out which mega-companies are hiding behind layers of corporate holding company names.
