For a while, no joke, I had dreams about insomnia. I had insomnia for real, and I'd doze off, and dream about trying to fall asleep. I'd wake up exhausted. Then stuff in my life changed, and it's not a problem.

But it was weird how many people needed to give bad advice. I'd make an offhand comment about being groggy, and somebody would say, Hey you should take sleeping pills!  And when I say I don't want to become addicted to sleeping pills, they just repeat their advice like they never heard me, like I'd never thought of it before.

Another one is people say, You should just go to bed earlier. But explaining that insomnia is different from staying up late is useless. They'd just keep repeating, Maybe you should just go to bed earlier.

After a while I learned to say, Okay I heard you the first time. Just keep repeating it over and over every time they try say anything. After a while they give up and leave, but without realizing, Oh is that how annoying it is when I do that.

But I moved away from there, and those broken robots that lived there, and I don't lose sleep.

fark that. I love sleeping. If i have to get up early i go to bed early. I only stay up late if i know i have nothing worth doing early the next day.... which seems to be a lot lately.

I get it. After a day of running around a hospital with never ending pages, phone calls, and STAT stuff, then coming home to a honey-do, a two year old, and a 7 week old, all I want to do is read books and read Fark. In silence. For like an hour till I fall asleep. Call it whatever you want, I don't care - that's my little slice of life to unwind from my day. But at the same time I can't just lay down and instantly fall asleep. The reading helps me unwind and actually fall asleep. So yeah, I'm sacrificing sleep time to do what I want at the end of the day.

I didn't start sleeping more than 3-4 hours a night, the six nights a week I even could sleep until I started taking ritalan. I think it's pretty amusing. I wish I had started earlier than mid 30s.

Yeah, this is real. More for introverts I think. When most of your time isn't yours (parenthood, working 2 jobs, caregiver, whatever), it's involuntary - you just HAVE to recharge away from other people. Some kind of boring mindless entertainment is usually the answer.

My dad's sleep schedule has been much more healthy since he retired - for some reason he doesn't spend 2-3 nights a week playing sol.exe until 1AM like he did when I was a kid. I used to wonder why he did that until my introverted ass was working 70 hours a week in customer service in my 20s. Ugh.

Spice Must Flow: But it was weird how many people needed to give bad advice

I totally empathize. I've been experiencing chronic insomnia for more than thirty years now. For me, it's a neurological issue that was triggered when puberty hit.

It's like "Sure, Karen. I'll totally try drinking a glass of warm milk with an inverted knife in it while standing on one leg. I'm sure that's the miracle cure that all the neurologists and somnologists I've seen in my lifetime have completely missed."

It's not even solely that you can't fall asleep. It's that you're just not tired. No matter what you do throughout the day or how much exercise you get in a day.

I feel seen

I had pretty bad insomnia my whole life. And yes now I do things that probably make it worse, I will stay up late playing video games. But I also know that if I lie down at 11:30 I'm just going to be awake, toss and turn, and really intensely want to check my phone or read a book or something for the next 3 hours and ended up falling asleep later than if I had just stayed up till I was tired

But everybody and their dog has some stupid idiot piece of advice that's obvious that I probably already tried.

"late nights followed by early mornings can directly lead to serious sleep deprivation"

This is the kind of insight that I read these articles for. Key points like this that are super important. Deep insights into cause and effect. Thank you article writer for showing me why I'm.lacking sleep.nits that I stay up to late when I have to awaken at 7am!

And knowing is half the battle.

They can psychotically anal-ize anything they want to.   But the tag "revenge procrastination" is dubious.  Revenge for what and, more to the point, against whom?

It's a desperate clawing for some little pleasure out of a day otherwise devoted to reaching for marks other people have set for you.

I call this "Sunday Night 'I don't want the weekend to be over yet!' Insomnia."

Giving it a clinical name legitimizes it too much.

Thanks to the pandemic my management has been enlightened to the idea that strict 8 hour/ 5 days a week is not everyone's best fit.  Mine so far seems to be doing 4x10s with every friday off.  It makes the weekends feel far more fulfilling, Saturday has transformed from 'that day after the work week' to a real day of not thinking about work at all, and it softens the blow of sunday night's monday dread because I know its just four days until the next time off period.

/works for me any ways and glad my manager is open to such an arrangement

For a while I was having some trouble sleeping (as I do intermittently). Then I had a dream where, because I was "awake" in the dream, I thought I wasn't getting any rest, which seemed upsetting so I told myself to wake up so I could go to sleep. Woke up into another dream, got more frustrated that I wasn't getting rest because I was "awake", woke myself up again into another dream. Did it again and woke up into a fourth dream, at which point I said to myself "fark it, I'm not gonna get any rest anyways, so I'll just use magic dream powers" and it became a lucid dream.

/summoned some ladies in the lucid part and the inside of their mouths was surprisingly... cottony
//decided not to find out what was going on downstairs :(
