Pretty sure the beginning was when no one was hung for treason over the Iran Contra treason thingy. It has been a steady march towards despotism once they realized there were no consequences.

So like, we seriously can't decide between no laws at all or a totalitarian police state?

Is this the final, inevitable stage of a two-party system? Or just that we're finally realizing that laws only apply to the governed, never the governors?

A favorite point to bring up; one of the guys who should have been hanged went on Fox News a few decades later to complain that Iran should not have missiles.

Yes

One of the worst aspects is that they want to take over local government at every level but actually have zero interest in performing the civic duties to any degree of competence. It's very similar to the Taliban retaking Afghanistan government and realizing they don't really want to or know how to govern.... just conquest

Kind of hard to have a democracy when one side is committed to civil war.

Weird that the same people who protest against too many laws and too much government intrusion are the same ones who'd vote for a totalitarian like Trump or Cruz or Hawley

Republicans in Congress know exactly what they're doing when they fail to push back on this.

In the early 1990s, there were certain Republican congresspeople who winked at the various early militias forming around the country. The "black UN helicopter" people. That was until the Oklahoma City bombing.

People shouldn't be surprised, after all traitors gonna treason. ALL Republicans are traitors... ALL Republicans are terrorists.

I can say that because if you disavow the GQP traitor/terrorist policy, they vote to kick you out.  The only PURE Republicans are those that support treason and terrorism.

Neither of those empires fell because of intra-Senate or Parliament violence. The argument Subby is pushing doesn't make sense, not least of all because USA doesn't hold any colonial possessions nor risk invasion from some external enemy.

Posting memes isn't exactly an ides of March moment.

Maybe they should do an experiment and have Adam Schiff or Chuck Schumer post a video of them killing Lauren Boebert or Marjorie Taylor Greene and see how the GQP reacts, ask them how they feel about it. It would be interesting to say the least.

Don't get upset, it's just a thought. No Democrat that I can think of would ever do anything like that.

But hell, about a year and a half ago there was a news story that more liberals were buying guns. Sean Hannity's reaction was to ask why so many liberals were buying guns and what they were planning. Their double standards about everything, including threats of violence, makes their pathology crystal clear.

It began with Nixon.

The Republican party saw consequences for misbehaving as a result of doing the right thing when faced with overwhelming evidence, and vowed never to let that happen again.

Also why they made Fox News, to have one network back the Republican viewpoint no matter what.

But, now isn't 2022.

Pelosi's out regardless in 2022. She's pretty much said she's not running for re-election and is retiring after the current Congress.

If we somehow manage to hold onto the House, we'd need to put AOC or Omar or maybe CBC leader Joyce Marie Beatty or Maxine Waters in as Speaker for an equivalent level of deterrence.

But, as I've said before, 2022 could be the end of democracy for another reason: if the GQP gets as few as three more state legislative chambers (as of the elections a month or so ago), they can call a Constitutional Convention and get rid of the entire Constitution and put whatever they want in its place. If we focus on keeping the House and Senate and ignore the State legislatures, that could very well be game over.
