There was a story on Fark years ago of a woman who got trapped in one of these donation bins and died. I  think it wasn't the first time she had tried stealing from a bin.

yes yes throw the people who have nothing in jail instead of giving them some clothing and a meal and pointing them toward some sort of help to work their way out of being so destitute that they need to steal clothes from a donation bin.  this is a strategy that will work and continue working and has no chance of failing.

Man, whatever. Some of the donation bins I see in suburban Portland are always overflowing with stuff. You'll see about 18 trash bags full of clothing piled up all around them.

I see people doing this all the time...not just donation bins but also at Goodwill.

It's nothing I really get outraged enough to call the cops about. These bins are usually overflowing and it seems that most of the clothing is junk anyway. Unfortunately it seems that poor quality clothing has become the norm and people are happy to buy large quantities of the cheapest shiat available, wear it once or twice and discard it. It then ends up in a donation bin and much of it apparently gets rendered into carpet padding or whatever. It does not actually end up back on a shelf for sale.

I really prefer to make things last an incredibly long time...I'd rather repair decent quality items than buy some new cheap shiat. I do think this is the best option from a cost perspective, for utility and also ecologically. Maybe our climate wouldn't be spiralling out of control if people bought one thing and used it for decades.

This is why they mostly disappeared in the first place.  I can appreciate people wanting to help in a convenient way, but Charities, do a pickup round on a regular basis so the boxes don't become eyesores and attractive nuisances and living situations.

Cool story bro time for me for once. I used to actually work out of one of these. During the day we work out of one of those moving pods. Anyway we got so many donations at one point i physically could not stand inside it. Thankful a truck was sent and that was one of the days I worked my hardest but we did it.

So next morning I come to the pod and had a brief panic thinking I didn't close the pod when I left that morning. Then I notice the lock had literally been ripped out and couldn't stop laughing. We emptied the pod late in the day. These people obviously drove by and saw it full but didn't see us unload it. So they ripped off the locks in the middle of the night, force open the shutters..... And just see a camping chair the staff use in the middle of the pod and jack farking shiat else.

Sucked to be them!

Sort of related CSB: Many years back my boss had a brand new pickup truck, maybe a week old. Middle is summer, hot day. One day he leaves work to find someone had thrown a metal pipe through a window, which had lodged into the opposite side door, and stolen the gym bag, which had been on the front seat. For the next week he'd chuckle every once in a while because he pictured them opening up their bounty and all that was in it were his dirty gym clothes that had been sitting in a hot vehicle all day, complete with nut sweat soaked undies.

You might be tempted to feel for the poor people, but.

Personally, I'm not all that rich. I get my food and clothes for free from church-based charities. The clothes are clean and occasionally well-organized in racks, and sometimes you find good name-brands.

If you're in my income bracket, you're sure to have a whole list of the local food and clothes banks. I tend to suspect that the "donation divers" have other motivations. It's not hard to get free clothes for yourself. Odds are that they were aiming at the resale market.

Yes, they were stealing things intended for the poor and to help the poor. Were you wishing it was also labeled "for cripples and orphans?" Do you figure when someone takes a child's piggy bank do you figure "oh I guess they must have needed it more?"

There should be unlocked little donation boxes next to the big ones. If the little box is empty, fill it first. We produce so much more clothing than needed. If your game is raiding the box to resell clothing that people wanted to give to those in need, wtfe go ahead, that's literally what Goodwill does. I was just at a Goodwill outlet. That one store bales TONS of clothing a day to ship to a textile reseller.

I apologize that they didn't arrest the Dean of Cunning from the Logic Department at Brigham Young University but here we are, talking about a guy and his girlfriend stealing from an unsupervised outside collection box of donated things they are intended to be either sold to provide money for the poor or be given to people without resources, guns, or crowbars.

Couple in need arrested for taking goods intended for people in need. Not going to argue the particular distribution was equitable, but aren't we a country were the resourceful are rewarded for showing initiative? A bit of a double edged sword, but it must be great to live in a place where crime is so low, police come running to get dumpster divers, but on the other hand it's a place where people will call the cops on people who feel they need to dive dumpsters to survive..

The bin says clothes and shoes only, so if they were to pull out books or electronics, would it be considered stealing? Also, aren't those things designed like havahart traps?

Not  this organization, but when I last dropped something off at a bin like this, I saw there was a notice saying that it was for profit.

But who's the victim? Who files the complaint? A company.  Not the doner. And not the needy person.  Jfc. The thef could be needy. And.  I don't believe charities are not just middle men scumbags.
Those are facts. You leave something at a bin. It's no long yours.  And the bin acting like they got hurt is stupid.

I read a statistic recently that said the average article of clothing only gets worn 7 times before it's discarded.

And then we ship them off to countries where people used to be able to scrape by making clothes, but how can you compete with fairly new clothing that's free?
