"We're not pleading guilty to something we didn't do," Carroll said. "If there was any crime committed, the punishment doesn't fit."

Lady, I would take that no-jail plea if I were you.

By "Hacking" i'm guessing they used passwords taped to the underside of a keyboard that anyone could see if they looked.

It's amazing what fire and fury can rain when someone is motivated to punish, unlike say, an insurrection or something.

Mom's the vice-principal. She gave her kid her password.

FTFA: More than a year after the alleged hack, the mom and daughter insist that even after the "false" votes were deleted, Grover still won the majority. (Court documents appear to back up that claim.)

Whoops.

An additional 5 years should be tacked on for aggravated stupidity.

Oh and I especially like the part where the defense attorney casually drops that they're going to trial against his advice.
The whole town sounds like a bunch of Southern fried shiatheels who give waaaaaay to much importance to high school.

That's true of most of the Panhandle. This particular part is in Matt Gaetz' House district.

Certainly looks like they were farking around, but for once the finding out phase is seriously excessive.  Give them probation and strip the title, it's homecoming not Deutschbank's international money transfer system

And dingy? And this is something that it is time-honored to celebrate?

I had never hear of it, so did a Google. Looks like it's closer to LA (the real one, not the Lower Alabama one) than Alabama.

Not that changes much for that part of the state.

The cops fanned out swat team-style around the home, stationing themselves at the front, back, and side doors. They pounded on windows and demanded the alleged cybercrooks show their faces, according to witnesses and court documents.

Seriously???

To win the crown, investigators say Grover got dozens of students' ID numbers and birthdates from a district-wide computer system using her vice principal mom's log-in. The pair then allegedly cast at least 246 fake votes for the teen on Carroll's cellphone and a computer at their home through Election Runner, a third-party app used by the school.

These were not very smart people...

/Especially if they were offered a no jail time plea.

The bigger problem is that these people can't (or refuse to) see that what they did was wrong.

It was very important she win because so many rich, famous, influential, powerful people got their start as Homecoming Queen. And that's why the punishment must be severe!

"We're not pleading guilty to something we didn't do," Carroll said. "If there was any crime committed, the punishment doesn't fit."

It's dumb to deny committing the crime then say IF a crime was committed the punishment doesn't fit. It makes her sound guilty. It's like saying I didn't do anything but even if I did, it wasn't that bad.

That's an awful lot to read and a pretty severe punishment for a teenage beauty contest.

I'm not from the south and if we even had a homecoming queen, I can't recall anything about her or the event.

Oh, yeah fair point, at least one in this thread already has made that error.

Actually comes up at work pretty often , "fortheloveof can you fix this?"

"I have the knowledge not the permissions, go tell S6, fortheloveof said <problem and solution required> for <machine_id>."

"Why not just do it for me now?"

"Because you are not worth the risk, and if I always do it the right way, when I get asked what happened people will know my integrity is intact and believe me. Besides if I send you they will fix it because I told them what was wrong and how to fix it."

The stories about this gloss over the real crime to focus on the homecoming vote.

The mom let her daughter poke around the system looking at anyone's records, and the daughter was using what she saw to gossip at school.  Rigging the homecoming vote was one thing, but this mom let her daughter look at student records that are supposed to be private.

16 years? Seems a bit harsh considering the punishment for rape is probation. Oh wait, never mind. It is probation if you are rich, white, and male. These two ladies only tick off one check box. Carry on, American justice system.

High School is farking weird, in that some people seem to place an absurd amount of importance on it.  The random farking around on a computer I did during that time was much more useful.

Using a privileged account to get access to other students' accounts to win homecoming queen?  That's dumb on so many levels, use that access to make your grades look better or something.  This is so dumb it's giving me a headache.

2021-11-27 1:58:01 AM
Our little molehill is all grown up now.

Back in saner times, mom would maybe be fired for letting daughter have admin access, crown would go to runner-up, and the police would be eating donut. SWAT? They used more firepower than was used to arrest the most recent spy couple from Maryland.

I didn't have this homecoming nonsense.  Is it really that important?

I've heard of "making an example of" offenders, but isn't this a little ridiculous?

It probably had more to do with butthurt on the PD side. They f'd around then wasted the cops' time and efforts dragging this out for months. They could have just taken the plea but now they're dragging it into court where the prosecution has to rent a pickup truck to haul in all the evidence.

From the police point of view, a little comeuppance was warranted.

If it wasn't for the, "what we did wasn't wrong and I would have won anyways!" Complete lack of acceptance of responsibility and repentance I might agree with you: but once you factor in the stupid and bullshiat attitude on top of it it feels like it might be just right.

If one of the other contestants had pulled this I imagine she would be suing and wanting maximum punishment.
