Ladies and gentlemen! DAAAAAAAAAAVE CHAAAAPELLE!

When one student called him a "bigot" and said, "I'm 16 and I think you're childish, you handled it like a child," Chappelle responded defensively. "My friend, with all due respect, I don't believe you could make one of the decisions I have to make on a given day."
In response to another critical question, Chappelle told the student body of nearly 600, "I'm better than every instrumentalist, artist, no matter what art you do in this school, right now, I'm better than all of you. I'm sure that will change. I'm sure you'll be household names soon."

LAUGH, HE'S HILARIOUS!!

Chappelle's spokesperson dismissed issues raised by students, saying that "They are complaining that he talked and said the n-word. If anything, Dave is putting the school on the map." The spokesperson also complained that students who supported Chappelle were not allowed to speak at the event and that the kids "deserved an F for forgiveness."

How about an F for F*CK you, asshole.

Oh, and he's so cancelled, that he gets to go to a school that's naming a theater after him and shiat proceeds to rant at the students that were forced to sit at assembly and listen to his bullshiat.

CANCEL CULTURE, I TELL YA!

If I was a student there I'd find the inevitable plaque with his name on it and move it to inside one of the urinals, every time it was returned I'd go put it back when it belongs.

Basically, that whole section of his last special was him throwing a temper tantrum that trans people dared tell him that they found some of the jokes that he told in some of his specials hurtful.

That should settle the renaming issue.

And really - how f*cking insecure in your manhood do you have to be to GAF about how someone else gender identifies.  How f*cking insecure do you have to be as a professional performer to need to point up how much better an artist you are than a bunch of high school students.

STFU, Punk-ass biatch.

has he always been a huge asshole? i never watched his gigs.

i'm aware that not all great comedy is "nice", but punching down on teenagers is NEVER good.

and doing so when they are trying to honor you by putting your name on the building seems egregious enough that they should cancel putting your name on the damn building.

He's entered the punching-down part of his career.

Kind of a shame because he just got approved for a comedy hall/restaurant in his small town in Ohio, but if he's going to go all Dennis Miller at this point of his life, then he's not worth the trip and I imagine a lot of comedians will avoid him.

Hell, even Lisa Lampanelli changed as she got older and ditched her early material of gays/blacks, etc. Sure it was funny at the time, but she evolved. Chapelle just sounds like an angry old man that people called out his material as offensive.

Yikes.

So, Dave has turned into an unrepentant prick. I guess the warning signs have been there for a while now. But it still seems strange. And, of course, it's upsetting.

But maybe he was always secretly a prick. I mean, how would anyone know? He's always kept to himself. Maybe this is why.

Oh well.

Why do we use the "punching down" or "punching up" phraseology? It's stupid. It automatically categorizes someone as less or more than someone else and puts the argument in terms of good v. evil. Not everyone punching up is a hero and not everyone punching down is a villain. There are no absolutes in this world.

"There are two kinds of humor. One kind that makes us chuckle about our foibles and our shared humanity -- like what Garrison Keillor does. The other kind holds people up to public contempt and ridicule -- that's what I do. Satire is traditionally the weapon of the powerless against the powerful. I only aim at the powerful. When satire is aimed at the powerless, it is not only cruel -- it's vulgar." -- Molly Ivins

Exactly. Dave is pretending he's a perennial victim when the only problem is some people don't like his jokes. Dave and his snowflake defenders need to learn not to get offended at everything.

When one student called him a "bigot" and said, "I'm 16 and I think you're childish, you handled it like a child,"

I'm genuinely curious: what kind of response do people think this warrants?  If I initiated that exchange at age 16, I'd have no expectation that someone take it easy on me after I said it.  If I stood up in public and called a rich guy an asshole, I wouldn't expect him to thank me or feel sorry for me.  I quite consciously kicked off a confrontation.  Because I wanted one.  And the "power dynamic" is what makes it a worthwhile thing to do.

Or does Chappelle owe them a fuller explanation like . . . the one that's on Netflix.  That he gets paid to do.  Or "you got me, I'm a bigot!"

That kid wasn't victimized, he confronted someone and got a response.  Nice work, actually.  If this kid is getting decent advice, he just found the incident that he's going to use in his college admission essays.

And if I'd done it, the last thing on earth I'd want is for Chappelle to get chastised for "punching down".  Fark that condescending bullshiat.  If I throw a punch, I'm expecting to have one thrown back.

But in that regard, why was he their hero in the first place? For 20 years, Chappelle regularly made jokes about poor black people, rednecks, Asians, Jews, Hispanic people, women, and gays. Yet all that was okay with audiences.

Goddamn, Chappelle really is becoming a whiny snowflake.

I'm a straight white male so my opinion in this area doesn't mean shiat but I saw his special and I didn't think it was that offensive. It was even kind of poignant at the end.

That doesn't change the immaturity of bragging to a bunch of kids about how much richer and more talented he is than they are.

I disagree.

The list you gave are all people who *choose* to be that way. While a weak argument could be made that incels don't choose to do without sex, the fact that they continue to look for answers from one another instead of listening to the people telling them "take a shower and treat people with respect" kinda destroys that one.

"Punching down" is about insulting people for things they cannot change about themselves, such as where they are from, the color of their skin, who they love, what disability they have, or what's between their legs. It's not funny.

I'm not "punching down" when I insult someone who thinks women owe him sex, or someone who in this day and age flies the confederate flag, or who wants to talk to me about scientology. They can change those things, yet they choose not to. It's open season on that.

I personally don't insult vegans because that's their choice, and it's more meat for me. (as long as they don't demand I stop eating meat).

But hipsters? Oh yeah.

Meh, if you call out a comic, you expect to get razzed from the stage. It's what they do.

Really, though, why are they naming the theater for Chappelle? I didn't see it mentioned that he bought naming rights, so I assume they are wanting to trade on his name. And then they decided to publicly semi-snub him. Maybe next time pay more attention to the content coming from a celebrity. You don't want someone dropping the n-word in school? Then don't celebrate people like Chappelle. He uses it. And if you do have him address the students, vet what he is going to say, or at least give him a list of topics or words to not include. If he breaks that, then you know 100% that he is not someone you want a part of the school named after.

This isn't rocket science. This is how show business works. Lay down the boundaries and set expectations. Anyone in the industry understands that. If you don't, don't be shocked when you get the language and attitude you expect from the entertainer.  And while the school isn't in media type entertainment, they certainly set strict standards with the outside presenters they allow in. Chappelle should have been no different. Except that they obviously didn't do that.
