One day, I was driving back down from Estes and pulled over to take pictures of something I'd been meaning to photograph.

I got out of my car and had walked about 12 steps when I realized there were jillions of elk approaching. There were elk hunkered down next to the neighboring houses, elk walking toward me, just elk galore.

I got back in my car and took the pictures from inside the glass. If you live here, your phone is full of sunsets, sunrises, snow capped mountains, dogs, and frosty nugs.

No place I'd rather be.

I really should just fark from my PC with adblock/noscript. It shouldn't be frustratingly difficult to close a tab.

It's the same with the deer here in Missoula. The east/southeast part of town is loaded with deer. Some even use the crosswalks. I think my wife and I counted 35 one evening while playing Pokémon.

Whoops, meant to say that your phone contains elk, moose, deer, and the occasional bear.

I wonder what their hooves do to the yard. When I was 5 years old my father used to take me fishing in a river we accessed by walking through a cow pasture and I can remember twisting my ankle several times as my small shoes didn't navigate all of the giant hoof prints very well!

I knew this was in Estes Park before clicking.  The elk there sometimes stop traffic and they do not give one single fark about humans.

Counted 26 elk in my front yard in Evergreen one morning.
The ground in the Rocky mountains lives up to its name it is about 50% rock. So animal hooves don't make much of an impression. In fact you can drive your car right across your front yard and leave no ruts at all.

How aggressive are they? Do you have to chase them away somehow before going to your car?

first of all they are very large. second they can get very aggressive if they think you are invading their space or going to mess with their kids. unless you want to find out what being gored to death feels like it would be wise to avoid them.
they are similar to moose in temperament if that helps.

Elks, or even moose, should not be cause for concern.  However, beware of the Odd Fellow.

About a month ago I was driving through Estes Park on the way to Rocky Mountain National Park and while stopped at a light, about 10-12 large elk just walked in front of my car.  One of the large bulls had a string of Christmas lights hanging off his rack. He must have walked by a bush with the lights and just yanked them off.

Last time I went elk hunting near Bridger there was a large herd, probably several hundred, that congregated on Mel Gibson's former Beartooth Ranch. The owners didn't allow hunting, and I think they knew it was safer.

There is a small cafe in Dubois WY that has jalapeño cheddar elk sausage on their menu. Great breakfast place, unfortunately, last time I was in Dubois, the cafe was closed. Because of the pandemic, they reduced their hours and were closed on Wednesdays. Oh well, next time, probably in 2 years I'll be near there again.

That is a very large herd. Are they sure they aren't cariboo rather than elk?
