(Twitter)   New COVID Variant B.1.1.529 has a very long branch length and a really awful Spike mutation profile including RBD-K417N, N440K, G446S, S477N, T478K, E484A, Q493K, G496S, Q498R, N501Y, and Y505H. Oh no. Not Y505H   (twitter.com) divider line

The mutations are what republicans are bringing to the US for Christmas. Republicans are making the US anti science and anti vax. Republicans are just evil.

Here's an article from Nature magazine, my preferred covid resource.  The article largely says that the new variant is concerning but we won't have much practical information about it until a few weeks from now.

Last Christmas, I gave you COVID,
The very next day, you passed away,
Now vaccinations are here,
it's the end of the year,
and the variants are mutating

Last Christmas, I gave you COVID,
The GOP, politicized away,
Republicans lied,
Trump nearly died,
and it's important to keep stores open.

Last Christmas I gave you COVID
Facebook said, there's a better way,
Horse Dewormer works fine
I don't understand why you died
The pandemic continues because idiots

February of 2020 I bought a mask with replaceable filters for just that reason. N95, N99, or even P100, all readily available. Figured if paper masks ran out, I had a reusable one on hand.

Still wouldn't need it if people would just get the farking vaccine.

Cases don't matter.  What matters are severe disease, hospitalizations, and deaths.  Preventing which, ultimately, is the point of the vaccines - not necessarily making people completely invulnerable to any infection whatsoever.

If we get to the point where everyone has some immunity (either through vaccination or prior infection) such that breakthrough cases are nearly universally very mild, then it doesn't really matter if more transmissible variants cause continuous circulation and recurring spikes of cases indefinitely. So long as people aren't any longer dying in huge numbers or overwhelming hospitals, then case numbers don't really matter.

This virus is going to be endemic, like another cold or flu virus. It's not going away, and everyone is going to get it sooner or later - vax or no vax.  The point of the vax is to make it more likely that when you do get it, you'll have to deal with a few days of cold or flu symptoms rather than a stay in the ICU.

wait for the 69 mutation.
at first it doesn't sound bad, until you get it.  I have to admit, it was underwhelming the first time I got it.  never again.   I didn't lose my sense of smell.  It turns out, for a short time , everything smells kind of shiatty.  I couldn't concentrate.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-11-26/africa-travel-restrictions-imposed-over-new-covid-19/100652438

A new COVID-19 variant which appears more potent than earlier forms is behind a spike in new cases in South Africa, according to the country's health authorities.

For the past few weeks, the country had been seeing a daily new case rate of several hundreds, but in the last few days it shot into the thousands and hit 2,465 yesterday.

It's a bit scary.. not good to see yet another variant.  Especially when this is a description:

experts warned mutations detected in the genetic code of the new COVID-19 variant could make the virus both more transmissible and better able to evade the immune system.
