I guess it's been so long now, and ultimately so successful, that many people have forgotten how much flak this casting choice received at the time...

Joe Bob Briggs in "Casino".  Okay, not that big a part, but he played the stooge slots boss very believably.  Someone who got hired because there was a position to be filled.

He's one of those actors that's been in a lot of not-great stuff, and is rarely the most memorable part of whatever he's in, but he always puts in solid work.

Do people really care about Travolta in PF?

A lot of people shiat on Chris Evans taking on Captain America after his roles as Torch and in that Cera flick about the vidya games, but having seen him in Sunshine I knew he'd do great if the writing was good.

Dolly Parton- Who knew she was also a great comedian? (9-5, Rhinestone Cowboy, Steel Magnolias , Best Little Whorehouse and everything else!) I wasn't even a CW music fan, but she's funny!
Also-
Farah Fawcet in 'The Burning Bed'.

To be fair, Marvel's done a great job at taking people who shouldn't work in a role and making it work great. Started with RDJ.

Roy Scheider in All That Jazz. If you grew up with him being cop guy in various movies -- cop guy with racist partner, cop guy in helicopter, family cop guy vs. shark, cop guy in submarine -- it's a shock.

Doesn't seem like he'd fit in a dance musical (as a dancer/director no less) or be a sexy beast shagging the ladies, spiraling to death via living a high-stress life of women, pills, booze, cigarettes and song in peak '70s clothing, yet he was Leaving Las Broadway with emotion and style in comparison to the other suicidal role I've hinted at. One of the worst Oscars robberies IMO.

Also, All That Jazz is the answer to the challenge of "make a dance/musical film that wins over straight men who hate dance and musical films, and bonus challenge, throw everything '70s into it."

I easily accepted Odenkirk in that role because it was the same guys who did John Wick.

In fact, surprised Keanu as JW wasn't mentioned yet. That shocked everyone.

Nah, most people thought those actors would be fine in their roles except maybe RDJ.  They expected him to kill the flick by winding up in a coma, but many knew his drug use made him *perfect* for a drunkard.

As for SammyJack, well... the 'Nick Fury coordinates a government-backed Avengers team' role was *literally* made for him.

I never got why that seemed like miscasting. Adam West (a Leslie Nielsen type oddball, serious man in comedy) and his Batman were goofy as shiat, and that's what general population of non-comic book guys knew of the character. After we've established a return to grim serious Batman does Sparkly Vampire actor suddenly raise eyebrows.

Keaton's previous roles indicated he was working on being a jack-of-all-trades, just missing action guy card, and Batman could get by on being gadget man like Roger Moore's Bond.

/I think Willis might have had more action guy cred from Moonlighting bits than Keaton at the time.
