There's enough people on Fark that throw shiat around, so it should be quite common.

The fertilizer shortage should be measured after the holiday.

This is horse shiat. But seriously, it's probably because we've run out of ivermectin.

the problem stems from too much shiat hitting the fan and going sideways.

no shiat! Sherlock?

I only have an outhouse for a bathroom and I've left plenty of human fertilizer in the bottom. I wear a headlamp at night when I go out there and it happened to shine down into the tank earlier. There is a poop stalagmite growing. Looks kinda like this down there...

Stalagturd is the proper name for the phenomenon.  Yay for pooping in outhouses in neg40.

We have a huge strategic reserve of bullshiat at Mar a Lago. Shouldn't be a problem.

Why is everyone focusing on poop?

They said they need nitrogen.  We can get that from pee.

Years ago we started dry composting (no meat, dairy eggs, but egg shells okay) using small black plastic garbage cans with holes randomly drilled in them. When a can is about 3/4 full, we dumpy it int next can to "rotate" it. It takes about 2 months but it's continuous cycling & gets about a 1/3 can of good compost to spread on garden. We are a 2 person household. We try to interest our In-Laws who live in the same Culture Sack. 10 of the dozen homes are Hubby's siblings , & their children, and they have kids and produce more waste. We use just table s raps and garden cuttings and we produce a lot. In the Summer heat, we cycle the cans weekly but in the Winter just fortnightly. Hubby's offered In-Laws to cycle their cans if they'll sort better but ... We put out so little garden & table scraps we only set our recycling bin out maybe 2xmo tops. It's an easy system and it works.

There's a cap to the supply of natural gas, used to generate the hydrogen in the nitrogen fixing process. So in summer, when demand for natural gas is low, nitrogen fixing is high, but farmers aren't demanding it. There's only so many places you can put the fixed nitrogen products, and overly large deposits have greater risks. It would be nice to load that all into jumbo bags in containers, but they can't even get enough containers to ship grain overseas.

If this is starting to sound familiar, huge physical systems like supply chains are nothing like your computer. You cannot just turn them off and reboot them.

Golly. If only there were farming methods that didn't involve covering the soil in salt, bit instead cultivated the soil so that fertilization with salts isn't necessary.

We will be okay. Plus maybe climate change will make more snow-cover. There is a lot of nitrogen in the snow.

Prices of ferts I order went up last spring, I got in just in time on a few items. I just saw the 2022 price list on irrigation line, and wow. I just bought up enough for the next few years from old stock. I'll cut corners where I can on a few things next year, good thing it's just a hobby for me.

Hey, maybe we should figure out what "recycling" really means.  It's not just throwing your glass bottles in a plastic garbage can.

Those methods exist, but are much less efficient. Work on reducing the global population first (preferably through birth control and natural aging rather than the more direct methods) if you want to return to that style of farming everywhere.

I'm sure that'll be the next thing.

Direct methods now, sustainable farming pratices later.

You are incorrect. Only organic farming has the potential to be sustainable, and even then it usually isn't. Any industrial agriculture is not sustainable, because of the massive inputs needed. These, as we see here, can be interrupted. And will be.  It can't be sustained.

Also, the idea that organic agriculture is less "efficient" than industrial ag is only true if you ignore the fact that industrial ag only works due to the exploitation of finite resources. This can't continue forever. And it won't.
