I love how real drivers were also in that film. They sucked at acting, but provided excellent authenticity.

Yes, but the fighting over first billing for Butch and Sundance was lame. From what I read, he wouldn't even settle for a 50/50 split.

It was said they had to run the car at half speed when they were filming on the Mulsanne Straight. When they tried it at full speed, the cars were traveling so fast there was nothing but a blur. This was 1988, but, you'll get the idea,

So what? He decided to not be in the movie instead. Every actor has that right, he didn't hurt anyone.

I was *just* about to say this. Spare a thought for the technical prowess of these films. Great to see the lengths to which the crews went to try to portray racing at its peak.

Fun fact, it's very hard to find F2 cars from that era without wings, even though they raced without them

They bought them up for filming, soaped the wings on, and presto, F1 cars.  You really can't tell the difference unless you know EXACTLY where to look

Maybe he just didn't like Paul Newman.

Think about it. They were both rising up the Hollywood ranks at the same time, and odds are neither one of them got a leading role where the other one wasn't either the first choice or the next choice. Add to that, Newman's sudden fascination with auto racing in the late 60s (McQueen was a lifelong car and motorcycle racer) and I can see how there'd be some resentment.

I love James Gardner, so it's a non-issue for me. I've been watching the old Maverick series  since I retired, I didn't know that there were 3 Maverick brothers and a cousin - Beau, played by Roger Moore.

You must either be unaware of of a lot of backstories, or dislike a heck of a lot of movie, tv, and musical major stars. Diva behavior in one form or another tends to go with the territory.

Besides watching Maverick recently I've also been watching a lot of the other old westerns on MeTV. In Wanted: Dead or Alive McQueen already did all the those little things that annoyed Brynner long before they did a movie together- touching/adjusting his hat, playing with his gun, inspecting little inconsequential things, etc.,  it was part of his acting persona.
Eli Wallach and other people where thoroughly amused by him in The Magnificent Seven, and Brynner wouldn't draw a gun in the same scene as Steve because McQueen was so good with a gun.

It's fine if he rubs you the wrong way, it happens. But a lot of people liked him, he was even a pallbearer for Bruce Lee.

His early years part of his wiki might explain a lot about his personality; his acting career is interesting, especially for the roles he did and didn't get, like happens for all actors.

Is that Johnny Rutherford in the "Yellow Submarine" at Indy in 1980? If so, I was there, on the fence in the infield, at the exit from Turn 2. We weren't that much farther away from the track than the people in the Le Mans video. It maybe 41 years ago, but, they were going really farkin' fast. Oh yeah, the infield was like a descent into the pre-civilized world, once was enough for me.
