This is very interesting but the mechanism itself is not exactly surprising.  It has been theorized that sleep, with all of its penalties including being arguably dangerous, is when our bodies do garbage-collection of some sort.  If it turns out that flaws in the way our brains evolved lead to protein buildup, and sleep allows for a process where the body can try to remove these proteins, that would make a lot of sense.  It might also imply a correlation between developing disrupted sleep among the youngish and a later progression into these brain diseases.
