Clicked the link hoping to find a discovery. Read the headline and bailed.

Here's a fun exercise, science journalists ...

How about finding and explaning interesting null results? Something like that could be an actual contribution to science literacy, rather than rehashing hypotheticals.

The dense atmosphere of Venus is hot enough to melt lead, tin, and zinc, with an average surface temperature even greater than Mercury's. Not a great place for any type of life.

I'm a tiny bit obsessed with aliens/UFO stuff and one thing I've noticed when talking about finding other intelligent life, emotional intelligence is rarely brought up which I think should change. It just seems like a far better, healthier perspective to take when looking out into the universe. Also has the added bonus of seeing all the life here in a different light.

FTFY.

Also, hot black smokers miles down in the ocean don't at first glance seem to be a conducive environment for life, either.

Yep. Seems like life flourishes anywhere close to an energy source.

*energy differential. The hell of Venus's surface has lots of energy, but if there's no convenient way to utilize it it won't do much good. Of course, the clouds are relativelypleasant and are likely to have stratification...

FTA: But it's (phospine is) also a waste product from a certain kind of "abiotic" microbe that lives in oxygen-free environments.

"Abiotic" means "not alive", in other words, not a microbe, which is a living thing. It's even used correctly by someone quoted later in the article.

Also, sulfuric acid rain. Many of you haven't had the opportunity to see what hot sulfuric acid does to most materials, but it is gloriously destructive.

If I'm reading this article correctly, the presence of a significant quantity of phosphine has been determined to exist in the venusian atmosphere. Two different methods reached the same conclusion and, so far, no one has been able to show otherwise.
No plausible, abiotic, explanation for the presence of this gas, in this quantity, has been proposed.
Organic life, although apparently improbable under these conditions, is the only known mechanism for the production of this gas.
I'm going with Spock on this one.

Major doubt has been cast on the entirety of the affair. Major doubt as to 'significant phosphine', and of course major doubt as to phosphine meaning life is present. The whole thing was hyped up to an extreme degree and came crashing down almost within hours.

And the best part is, breathable air is a lifting gas on Venus.  All you need to do is build a big-ass balloon, put your Venusian colony-ship in it, and it'll float merrily along in the upper atmosphere for as long as you keep it inflated.

Will be interesting to see what the DAVINCI+ and VERITAS probes mentioned at the end of the article find.
