I worked at a restaurant where 3 customers ate so much that the restaurant abandoned their All-You-Can-Eat Sunday Buffet.  After the first time. The 3 followed the same route: they fasted so that they could use the restaurant to feed them for around 5 days.  Fast 2 days. Binge. Live off the excess for 2 days. It wasn't morally repulsive as much as it seemed reptilian.

The real question is, was this guy influenced by all those cartoons/comedy bits, or did the writers actually see this kind of thing w/ their own eyes? I've seen some buffets that were borderline sitcom bits.

I had a buddy who was asked to leave an all you can eat buffet because he simply ate too much.  He went for the more pricey meat items.  He didn't bother with the carb filler stuff.

Yes, he was morbidly obese.  And he died of a heart attack in his mid 30's.  Although, addiction to pain killer meds didn't help either.

Yeah, it's not really a funny story.  :(

Last two times I went to a AYCE buffet just happened to be an Asian fusion type place, like 12 bucks, food was fairly decent, not good not bad. Both of those two times, and my only two times at that particular place, were the days of my worst hangovers in my entire life. I don't get hangovers often, but these two times, about a year apart, were farking BAD. both of these times were also not by my choice, roommate at the time, "hey we're going to (place) wanna come?" "No, I don't, but I definitely need food in me so sure"

My point being, even covid (and all the other nastiness) aside, I agree ten trillion percent with you. I can't associate any AYCE without thinking of how farking awful I felt both those days.

came in here for the -

"Even when he drinks soy milk, he can drink 20 or 30 bottles. When he eats the pork trotters, he consumes the whole tray of them. And for prawns, usually people use tongs to pick them up, he uses a tray to take them all."

and yet? still leaving quite hungry and dissatisfied.

there's an (apocryphal+unproven) theory that Cantonese evolved partially out of the need to be heard shouting beyond-loudly from boat to boat. but even if that's untrue, there's always the part where most of the amusing/useful insults derive from 2000 year old palace lineage slurs and also mafia-activities.

not exactly pie-rat-y, but trust me it always makes for some seriously wonderful "conversations"

will have to give that one a look! not much call for me to speak the language recently, sad to say - but I do keep in slight practice by cursing morans in the supermarche, that sort of thing.

also, here's a very basic decent primer got me started 20+ years ago... (IA even seems to have preserved the .au file links, yay!)
https://web.archive.org/web/20021215070505/http://www.unique.net/~yan/cantonese.html

some very simple favorites out of that list -

Chee Seen - [lit. cross wires]
i don't know if this has anything to do with electrical circuits or not, but if you cross the wires that are not supposed to touch, you'd short the circuit and make everything go crazy right? well, this adjective means crazy.
Sun King literally, God's Scripture. in medical terms, it is the central nervous system. but in the mean street of hong kong, it means crazy.
Bak Chee this is really a noun. it means idiot. copy my tone of voice and you'll be invincible at parties where cantonese is the first language.
Yeung Shui - [lit. ugly face]
it means "(because you have an) ugly face". so if your friend crashes his/her car into a street sign in broad daylight pulling out of the supermarket parking lot or comes up a split second short of making the Olympic team despite of all the hard work and dedication, this is the perfect phrase to use. i mean, after exhusting all the possible logical reasons, what remains, however improbable, must be the cause.

Point. But back in the day there was a Chinese buffet that had the best wings I'd ever had. They also did a to-go box by the pound. I quit going when the employees insisted on filling it for you. Phrasing. Another place had AYCE crab legs but I hated going there. Some white trash bubba and his broodsow always hovering waiting for the tray to be refilled. However...

CSB: I spent 3 weeks in South Africa in 2009. Wonderful people, beautiful country, excellent food. Now, if anyone gives me shiat about American food portion sizes I just tell them to go to SA. Holy crap I've never seen plates piled higher.

I had an Aussie roommate who said that they should be called 'all you can stand' buffets, as they tended to have fried foods that just made you queasy if you tried eating a lot of it.

I like them in the 'gives me a chance to try lots of different foods that I might not otherwise order' sense like an Indonesian Rijsttafel.  It's often a good way to learn about a cuisine.

I've also learned that there are some foods that are good in small amounts, but not so great in quantity.  (Like liver)
