Well, I'll certainly never look at an Isuzu NPR the sane way.

Especially since 20 something years ago I watched one destroy a car that was road raging.

Lol. Stereotypes are stereotypes.  Cultures that tend to be known as "rule followers" want to know exactly what the rules are so they can exploit the weaknesses in the system.

I wonder how "at crosswalks" is defined. Different judgment calls regarding which pedestrians are trying to use a crosswalk, and which are just near one, could potentially make a substantial difference to the stats.

First time I vacationed in Japan the travel agent warned me that the law there doesn't require them to stop and let you cross, that ones without lights to stop the traffic were really nothing more than a suggestion. I used a lot of footbridges.

They also drive on the same side of the road as we do in the UK though, so I didn't get the thing I get in Europe where I look the wrong way before I start to cross.

I have to admit that sometimes I just do not see them there. I am totally bad because of that, of course. I live pretty close to several schools, and sometimes their uniforms blend in to the background. It happens.

PLUS, I love to let them cross, so I hate missing places when they are waiting. I always get a charge out of the peko at the end. It will warm the cockles of the most curmudgeonly of hearts to have some kid with a randoseru on his back that weighs about 30 kg dip his head, bend at the waist, and almost flip over from the weight.

And, stopping is the law. In fact, if ANYONE is anywhere in a crosswalk, you are obligated by law to stop, even if you have to wait 30 seconds before they are in front of your car. The law is designed to keep people from playing dodge em with pedestrians and to keep one car from blocking the view of another.

If you don't stop for peds, take a different route. Or, you know, report yourself to the police. It is your duty. Because you are going to kill a little kid someday and your life will be over.

It is those other'uns in that other place doing all the law breaking.

No. Unfortunately, it isn't. Little by little, it is getting worse. People are getting selfish and acting like jerks. As a curmudgeon, my head explodes more and more often as I watch these little rule breakers make things worse for everyone.

You get the handicapped parking scofflaws, the people who do not stop BEHIND THE WHITE LINE at stop signs, the speeders, and the ped zone violators.

Anywhere south of Tokyo must be unbearable. My feeling is that north of Tokyo is better, but things seem to be creeping to the general level of selfish idiocy pervading the world.

The travel agent is wrong and right. It is definitely against the law and you WILL lose points. At least that is what they tell me when I renew my driver's license. Any marked ped crossing obligates a driver to stop until that crossing is cleared. Also, and I think this has been in the last five years, if someone is waiting or if someone is crossing, even if they are not in your lane, you still have to stop.

I will also say that I have never seen it enforced. In areas with cameras, nailing drivers who do this would be a cinch. If it ever needs to be enforced, it will be. Police have a way of not caring and then suddenly leaping into action on behalf of the public. It becomes a crusade. That has not happened.... yet.

Bottom line is that if you don't want to be hit by a car, be careful because they might not stop. If you want to cash in and be hit by someone, do it in a ped crossing because the driver is 100% at fault and the police will nail that guy.

This is true, although I should have clarified that Tractor Ojii-san was able to get the job done through the Intimidating Presence passive buff.

/also he did not void his bowels and/or bladder after he perished -- this is an equally important plot point

I live near several Japanese high schools. The streets are flooded with high school kids who have no concept of being the one behind the wheel, waiting for pedestrians to cross. They stare at their phones while crossing and seem to walk slower once they enter the crosswalk. And once one of them is crossing, there's a steady stream of them.

I don't blame those 70% for not stopping.

Fricking brilliant. An excellent bunch of videos for this thread.

Unmarked crossings, crappy elementary education, idiot drivers, bad roads, people crossing between parked cars and in traffic jams, unsupervised children, high speeds, poorly maintained vehicles, drugged out zombie pedestrians.... did I miss anything?

Oh. Japan has problems, but dayum.

Of all of the stuff in that video, I think Japan has... snow and ice. Driving in Japan and driving in Russia both have snow and ice. That is about where the similarity stops.

This was back in 2003 so it wouldn't surprise me if things were better now. The reason she drew my attention to it was that in the uk the rules are that you are supposed to stop even if people are only waiting on the pavement (once someone is on the crossing then it's as if there is a red light), so we get conditioned to interpret any sign that a car is slowing down as permission to cross.

There aren't that many crossings in the uk now that don't also have lights though, so it's not something I've thought about much lately.

Happened to me in San Diego. Jeep making a left hand turn turned into me at the Crosswalk. I had the green to walk, he was supposed to yield.

I'm no spring chicken, but I'm still able bodies and jumped out of the way. I spun around and threw my coffee at the Jeep out of pure retaliatory anger.

I thought the coffee would hit the car, but I guess I threw it hard enough and with the right timing that it went right into the driver's window that was down and slammed into his dashboard. Went all over the driver and his dashboard.

I should have walked over and punched him when he pulled over, but I just walked away.
