The good news is the demographic that likes to hunt deer is 100% vaccinated, masked up, and takes no chances on getting sick.

They've been advised to stick to bears.

Salata said he presumes any transmission from deer to humans would likely involve the respiratory tract as it does with humans and that he recommends hunters take precautions when handling deer, not just around the nose and mouth, but with "other parts of the body"as well.

Seems pretty unlikely that there will be so many infections from the 2 deer most folks are allowed to tag in Michigan will result in a surge in the pandemic here.

The chance of infection while field dressing a deer is still going to be pretty low even if the deer has covid, and that it will only occur twice over the course of months should make the effect of deer to human transmission negligible.  There are between 500,000 and 1,000,000 hunters here most years, so we are talking less than 2,000,000 encounters. That number sounds high right up until it is compared to the number of encounters a person with covid has, or the rest of us have with one another: 10 million people encountering multiple people every single day, resulting in 100s of millions of encounters.

I doubt your presumption on the risk of field dressing, any break in your skin could be sufficient, and most don't wash up till they get out of the woods which opens more opportunity.

But you could be right. Idk tbqfh

Quite a few I'd imagine. The only hunters I know would probably start yelling at you if you said that about them though. Of course I don't judge people based on a single activity unless it's truly heinous like seal clubbing or frisbee golf.

Well, yes. I shot 2 so far this year and I am fully vaccinated (Moderna X3). I took them to a local processor and got them back packaged like they were store bought.

Yesterday I browned 2 pounds of venison burger with a large chopped onion. I added a few chopped hot banana peppers and some green chilies. Simmered that for a while then added a can of kidney beans and a can of crushed tomatoes. I added some ground red pepper and some cumin. I let that cook over low heat for about an hour. What were we talking about?

I mean, the main theory for how the current strain (well, the original human-strain of the current pandemic) jumped from other mammals to humanity was someone eating an infected animal.

Given the purposeof hunting deer I'd kind of suspect that'd be a bigger concern than the respiratory and fluid transmission TFA is bringing up for some farkin' reason (contact transmission through fluids on non-membrane tissues like your skin/hands isn't actually a particularly strong mechanism for transmission, at least in humans).  Generally speaking unless you suck you're not gonna be within six feet of the animal until it stops breathing, y'know?

But you will presumably eat it.  Unless you're the kind of hunter that can go fark themselves.

// I'm exaggerating.  There is a type of hunter that doesn't eat what they hunt, they're just not sport hunters.  They're the type that you hire to manage the population of an area's deer as an actual job with specific numerical targets and such; sometimes it's actually illegal to eat things they kill under those conditions because population-management is basically a form of pest control and can happen outside of the hunting season.

It simmered down well enough. Garlic is optional in chili. Hitler would have put spaghetti in his chili.
