That's a brain freeze.  He didn't want to get a backcourt violation but there was no other play.

At my age, that's a "I don't want to blow out my knee" type of play.  Sometimes you just let it go.  32 seems a bit young for that, but I don't judge.

No other play?

1) Touch the ball, stop play, ball goes to other team but you can regroup as a team and defend your goal.

2) Leave the ball alone but put yourself between the player and your goal and actually defend it.

Either of those options are infinitely better than just letting the guy pick it up and run past you for a breakaway layup/dunk.

That is a backcourt violation.  That's what I was saying was the only play.

It's more of a "I can't believe the NBA cracked down on my bullshiat foul baiting strategy so now I'm frustrated" type of play.  Harden is averaging under 5 free throw attempts per game for the first time since his second season in the league.  His entire game revolved around drawing fouls (or the threat thereof). He would either get to the line or have a good look at the basket because defenders had very little they could do when the ref called all the garbage that Harden got them to call.  It was extremely smart on his part, but the watchability of the NBA took a big leap forward this year now that they stopped calling that garbage.  Just need to eliminate the rip thru foul and the take fouls on fast breaks.

as you can see in this play though, he isn't blowing by run of the mill 3 and D guys from the worst team in the league.

so it's hard to buy the "rule changes are screwing me up" when you aren't even creating the space you need to draw your bullshiat fouls.
