Is the series any good? I don't know the books, but the video game (Witcher III) is probably the greatest action/RPG ever created, so there's that.

Couldn't make it through the first season. I might try season 2, since it looks like they've learned from the first year and were also given more money. The first season was pretty meh.

The first season was literally just boobs and Henry Cavill slaughtering everything, how is that not enjoyable enough to make it through only 8 or so episodes?!

The first few episodes are a bit confusing until you realize there's a bunch of different time periods all mashed together without any clear hint of flashback/forward. Once you figure out what is happening when it starts to make more sense. Definitely worth the watch though.

While I appreciate what they were trying to do in season 1, I certainly hope they switch to a chronological order of storytelling this time around. It takes a focused, amazing director to really nail the type of storytelling they did last season, and they missed the mark and just made it confusing.

Christopher Nolan can manage the "out of chronological order" thing. So can Quentin Tarantino. But having several different directors take a crack at it over the course of a season-long arc? That was a mess.

I'll give them a chance to wow me.

It doesn't help when half the characters are immortal, either.

I watched it once, figured it out after a while, then watched it again with my wife.  I was able to point out the time jumps to her and provide some context so she could enjoy the show without confusion.

I should not have had to do that.

I also haven't read/played any of the other versions of the property, and I liked it. It's pulpy fun. Like others note, it's a bit (but only a bit) confusing, as there are multiple stories going on over multiple timelines, and ultimately it turns out to all occurring over the course of several decades (centuries?... can't remember, but a couple of characters are essentially ageless, and that's unclear at first). By the end it all makes sense, though.

The series is staying closer to the books, which is a good thing. The games were mostly after the books (with a couple retreads, like Her Royal Highness the Striga). If you liked the games you will like the series. The atmosphere is spot-on and the casting has been excellent. You will get over the non-video game version of Triss. She actually look more like she is described in the books. I think it will make more sense to see her falling for Geralt. You know the flashback to young Ciri at the beginning of Wild Hunt? That's where this season will be going, taking Ciri to Kaer Morhen to be trained.

The screenwriters left tells out. In the very first episode Renfry talks about young princess Calanthe gaining her first victory in battle - then flashing to Queen Calanthe and her granddaughter speaking about the battles she has fought in her long life. That tells you right there that Geralt's 'adventures' in Blaviken took place 30-40 years before the invasion of Cintra by Nilfgaard. Fans of the series knew this - that much of Geralt's entire life has been haunted by the name The Butcher of Blaviken.

That was honestly the biggest problem.  If there were signals of age differences, you could follow it.  But they wanted it to be some kind of big reveal when you realized it, but everything was so jumbled by that point you just kinda went "uh, ok", and finished the season.

I plan on watching it a second time before S2, and I'm sure it'll be easier to enjoy.

The creature FX can be early Doctor Who bad* and the writing can be stiff but Henry Cavill has the charm and acting chops to paper that over. There are some really good stories in the first season, enough at least to get me to watch the second.

* There is a dragon effect in one episode that made me laugh out loud.

Why, because it looked like it was cut and pasted from Xena?

I would have liked it to be better, but I didn't find it so awful it ruined the story.  Maybe one day they'll Lucas it.

Worst CGI I've seen in the last 10 years.  I can't remember laughing, but I do remember going "what the fark?!" when the rest of it had looked pretty decent to me.

It was like they'd shot and done the FX for the entire season and somebody went, "Oh crap, we forgot the dragon episode!" and only had budget for somebody's nephew on a Netbook with Tiktok filters.

I haven't played the games.

The series made very little sense to me. I had a hard time figuring out how, when or why anything was happening.

There seems to be no rules in this world. One off weird shiat just happens over and over again.

Sounds as if it's worth a watch. Meanwhile, I hope the folks at CD Projekt Red are working on Witcher IV.
