It would be a nice house.

Find the descendants of the slaves and offer them the property if they want it.

So sad that the dukes of hazard don't have that kind of money. Maybe the Klan will jump in.

I'd love to live in the middle of a cemetery. Spend all day telling people to get off mah lawn

2021-10-31 4:22:10 AM
They don't mention it because they don't want someone to burn it down before it's sold?

Came here to say this. Arlington national cemetery is up for sale?

I'd buy it and bulldoze it if I were a rich fellow.

It's getting ridiculous, people.  "Robert E Lee once peed in this rivier, so you can't live on a property adjacent to it, or cross a bridge over it, otherwise your a racist."  You all know you're breathing some of the same air molecules that Robert E. Lee once breathed, right?

Wow, another 2003 handle.

Who here is saying any of the things you're paraphrasing?

Not considered a selling point by this point?

Scans

Bet whoever buys it eventually believes otherwise.

I'd buy that for a dollar.

I'm sure it's nice but I wouldn't buy it. Think of the upkeep after all the "tourist" visits.

At first i was going to say burn it to the ground. Have a big party while burninating.  Then i realized many people would miss out on the opportunity.

So...
Demo it.
Sell pieces for charity.
Give many people the chance to burn a piece of a stain on this country's history.

If they have $5.9 million, they have just as much right to own it as anybody else.

Wrong house you illiterates.

It's just some place he lived in for a while. Like a childhood home or somesuch.

How could the listing omit the actual price of the house?

That doesn't sound very efficient.

Be careful.  They refused to allow the previous owner to pay property taxes in order to force a tax auction, and just picked it up cheaply.

2003 called and they want their Mitch Hedberg jokes back.

2021-10-31 7:41:28 AM
As someone who believes strongly in historical preservation this thread saddens me. The house should be maintained and kept around because it's part of the small remaining stock of 1800s buildings in a country where everything gets bulldozed and replaced. It's not the house's fault some asshole once lived there.

There is a comma in the headline, so it's just Lee's home. Robert E was being told about it.

I'd buy it and move the Alexandria Black History Museum, which is in a dilapidated building nearby and may not make it through COVID, in. They could have an entire exhibit dedicated to how his father in law (whom Lee served as executor) directed in his will that all of the slaves at Arlington be freed, and how that racist prick ignored it because he'd lose money if he did.

Could have included at least one picture.

And technically, it was his parents home. He lived there as a child.

If you really want to pee on Lee's house, you need to go to Arlington Cemetery.

Sort of. Kind of.

The legal history of that debacle makes for good nighttime reading. (Hint: Robert didn't want anything to do with it and the Manumission laws made the process almost impossible). The litigation was still going when the war broke out.

Somehow Washington's slaves got manumission under those same laws.

Anyone complains? Demand to know why they don't support US troops. Tell them to leave America.
