Nice.

Now do them all.

Oh goodie.

Now I can owe five times as much to whoever gets ahold of my account when Navient sells it.

I mean, yay that Navient and their evil interest rates are gone; but that's hardly going to help anyone whose debt was unfairly skyrocketed by them, is it? I know without looking the new servicer won't be auditing my loan to see if I got screwed anywhere down the line.

Still, good for future students, that's a plus.

Too late for me,  I got an email this past week that Navient was handing off to a new payment processor, I'm pretty sure this is just name-changing. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

It's not a real solution but, like the ACA/Obamacare, it's a patch that will help millions of people. That is a very good thing.

I do wish we could have a real solution. The cost of the Trump tax cut for the rich was greater than all student loan debt. The core of the issue is that, like everything else, it's a business. Since we like to make businesses out of needs we tend to get this sort of insanity. Until college is once again a public good, we're gonna keep creating this stupid debt.

Likewise. I think she would have gotten a lot more repaired and done by this point since she has a better understanding of the kind of people we're dealing with.

does that about sum it up?

I liked my Sallie Mae loan more than the others because the receipt book was colorful and the numbers next to the "amount owed" and "rate" were much bigger than my other loans.

If you hate loan / collections / government handout recipient companies like Sallie Mae, wait until you hear about dependent care "savings" accounts companies were doing with money that wasn't theirs and they never even HAD to loan out.

Elizabeth Warren didn't cancel all student debt, therefore this is just performative, incrementalist bullshiat to fool people into thinking Dems aren't actually terrible.

Elizabeth Warren is just Elisabeth DeVos with a (D) instead of an (R), and a net worth just an order of magnitude or three smaller.

Both sides are bad. Study it out.

Specifically, Navient and the others using shady, barely legal, or illegal tactics to expand loan debts. From things as trivial as long hold times to directing borrowers toward unfavorable repayment options to much worse. The new servicers are not guaranteed to be angels but Navient was truly terrible. You can look it up, there is a documentary on it on YouTube IIRC and numerous news articles.

So yes, this solves a serious and long running issue. It doesn't resolve the debt but makes it more likely to be properly serviced in ways that don't burden the debtors quite as much. Much like getting Medicaid helps many people. Often Medicaid offers bare minimum help for many things like mental illness or dental work, but if you break a leg it will cover you and keep you from becoming poorer than you already are.

Elizabeth Warren is amazing, but as a candidate she couldn't win her own state.  My wish is that she would be given the space to build a team and be turned loose to just do what she wants.

Someone in my family had to work with a student loan servicer (not Navient) to get a bank to approve a mortgage.

The customer service from the servicer was very good. Thanks, Elizabeth Warren.

The prevailing attitude among these... things is that if you don't fix EVERYTHING ALL AT ONCE FOREVER then you did nothing and might as well have not bothered.

Now I can owe five times as much to whoever gets ahold of my account when Navient sells it.

I mean, yay that Navient and their evil interest rates are gone; but that's hardly going to help anyone whose debt was unfairly skyrocketed by them, is it?

"Unfairly", lol.

Well, what would you call demanding more money in return for nothing but the threat of force via taking all your possessions and income (garnishment, etc.)?  It's the equivalent of eating lunch, then being handed a bill 5x what the menu price listed, while they threaten to call the cops if you don't pay.  You can't give the sandwich back at that point...

Wow, you are one ignorant sumbiatch, aren'tcha?  You do realize that people getting MBAs and other "useful" degrees from friggin community colleges & state schools can and do still go bankrupt, or suffer tremendously from school loans, right?  That it's not just the suburbanite set going to the Ivy League for $80k a year or whatever it's up to now?

Hell, the only reason I didn't go to a state school is because it was more expensive than several of my private options.

Ain't nobody going "broke" with a Masters in business degree from a state school.

Have fun finding some counter examples, but it's clearly not a problem to get a business degree.

She lost her lead during the debates when she wouldn't admit that her plans would require tax increases. Which is too bad because her plans were pretty great. At least some of her protégés are cleaning up Navient.

Not sure this will be an improvement. The loans don't go away - they're going to be sold off to other collectors who are likely going to be harder to police and may well be much less trustworthy.

It sure feels good to have an administration in place that actually governs for the good of the average citizen.

In terms of the actions of the executive branch (not legislation), I think when all is tallied Biden's will be seen as the most effective administration since Johnson. The kind of hidden progress that's too wonkish for conservative nutjobs to even notice when it is occurring.
