I read what "Squid Games" is about and have no desire to see it. Question: Why is it so popular?

The world is so dark and depressing that I can't watch anything dark and depressing. (It's why I stopped watching "The Handmaid's Tale.")

I'm led to believe that it dives into the psychological effects of the misery well and that it contrasts the misery with an interesting brightly colored aesthetic.

Plus people like mixing kids and ultraviolence.

I dunno, the Squid Games actually reward intelligence.  That jock who tormented you in dodge ball probably wouldn't last five minutes.  I'd say it levels the playing field compared to the inherently biased gym system our schools currently use.

It's a powerful message about what being deep in debt does to people, and it's extremely anti douchebag billionaire.  I wasn't sure I'd like it when I chose to watch it, but I'm glad I did.  It's not so much entertaining as it is eye-opening, because you can legitimately see people possibly acting that way when their backs are against a wall, and they have nothing but a mountain of debt.

I had no issue finishing Squid Games.  I don't think it's anywhere near the level of depressing as Handmaid's Tale.  The point of Squid Games is that it was voluntary.  The contestants were at their wit's ends and opted to do a life or death game...  they were even allowed to leave the game and many came back knowing they could die.  The Handmaid's Tale seems like something all of us could end up living if certain particular groups in this country were successful in taking power.

Oh no what will the children dress up in instead of those low effort costumes. I guess it's back to the plethora of horror movies icons, or just smear red and black pain their faces an go as an undead something.

But nothing violent.

I feel like it reminds people who grew up in the 80s of kids shows from that time, a little.

I saw a guy outside yesterday wearing a green tracksuit with a number on it. (The number was 067, which I had to look up -- it's the pickpocket.) Would have taken a picture, but he was looking in my direction.

Um... if you take away all the "violent image" Halloween costumes the only ones left are the "sexy ________" costumes.  These are elementary school children.

Or do ghosts, vampires, werewolves, zombies, demons, devils, Frankensteins, and other monsters not count as violent? Because I've seen those movies and they're pretty violent.

Handmaid's tale is much more frightening - It seems like a quarter of the senate actively WANTS the US to become gilead...

More than one-quarter.

I've never in my life been so glad to be old.

I watched the first 3 episodes and was mildly interested but then got distracted by life stuff, and I've had no real desire to go back and finish it. That and at least 2 of the big "twists" were heavily foreshadowed to the point that I had guessed them both by the end of the first 3 episodes and was proved correct by internet spoilers. I'd really say you are not missing much. If you ever have time to kill sure, check it out. But if you never do, you're not missing out any some great experience or anything.

May not be the parents so much as the parents have to tell the kids something when an older sibling watches, they are any place with memes, or just when they see Netflix advertisement with all the bright colors and that doll. There are music remixes of the redlight-greenlight part. It is rather hard to get away from.

Of course there are parents out there with the same mindset that mine had when I was a kid- go ahead and watch but if you get scared, don't complain, it's your own damn fault for not leaving the room when (parental unit) was watching a show they wanted to watch.

Maybe the more important issue is the parents who are letting their elementary school-attending children watch Squid Game...?

Nah, that's silly.  That would suggest the parents need to take responsibility for their children's activities and behavior, and clearly, they're not going to do that.

Yeah, I watched a lot of slasher flicks and horror movies as a kiddo but also there's a lot of stuff kids are aware of without having seen.Stephen King I always thought was very good at recognizing that in his younger characters

Also, Fark (and the news in general) seems to be really swooning for "kids are playing kids games that are referenced in this pop culture thing we are pushing."

My dad let me watch Robocop on repeat when I was 8, so I can't go full "kids these days" without being a hypocrite. I am close to just not pausing whatever mayhem is on the screen when my six year old comes walking in when I'm watching something. She'll catch on.

I remember when my middle school encountered a Bart Simpson t-shirt that stated "Underachiever: AND PROUD OF IT, MAN!"  Their response to this message was to ban ALL Bart Simpson t-shirts. I got in trouble for my "don't have a cow, man" Bart shirt.

When schools start banning franchise-specific clothing for moralistic, they always go too far.
