#2 should have put the nail in the coffin, or the meat hook or whatever. You can't top Dennis Hopper dueling chainsaws with Leatherface no matter how hard you try.

The 2003 remake still confuses me. They thought it was a series about a psycho sheriff?

The Alexandra Daddario one was so bad I was surprised the filmmakers managed to afford Alexandra Daddario.

There's the 1st one, and then pile the rest into a bin and toss them off a cliff.

IIRC that one was made before True Detective really put her on the map.

She was also willing to go topless in TC, but the director went with nipple tape instead

2 is a great movie, and 3 is underrated.

The "remake" would probably be okay if you think of it as just a generic sequel, but as a remake it's worthless. You can't have a TCM remake without Franklin or Grandpa.

No way, man. You can't trust anyone that doesn't recognize how good Part 2 is.

2 manages to be completely different in almost every way from the first but is an amazing movie.

After 2 ranking gets easier since each one just gets worse

In an R rated movie?  Wow.

What's so amazing about the original movie is its reputation.  It's labeled as this super violent, gory horror movie that was banned all over the place and the very mention of it set people off back in the day.  Yet, there's almost no gore and the violence was shot in a way where it was away from the camera or otherwise obscured.  That's how well Hooper filmed the movie.  All through the power of suggestion, acting, and the sets this myth of the super gory, horrifying movie came to be.  That is damn effective film making.

I only saw the first two. All the others looked like sh*t and I had no interest to see them.
I liked part two, although it gets a bad rap.

Am I the only one who thought the first movie was sh*t?

/ the last half hour or so I was rooting for Leatherface, just to shut the girl up

Low budgets were always a boon to good directors in the horror genre, weirdly.  It forced them to come up with clever ways to deliver the kills people came to see, which actually made them scarier.  Halloween was pretty tame compared to most slashers but the use of darkness and a silent, murderous antagonist is what creeped people out.

Meh. I also prefer Alien to Aliens, which clearly puts me in a minority.

I actually kinda liked the reboot with Jessica Biel. It wasn't great but I thought it did a great job of updating the source material. The pile of broken nails as victims were dragged down the staircase was a clever touch. LIke I said, not great but I thought it was better than it should have been.

I prefer the first TCM. I also prefer Alien over Aliens, and Evil Dead over Evil Dead 2, and Terminator over T2. For me it's all about the tone. A stark horror tone is what I watch movies like that for, if it was just action or satire or comedy that I wanted I'd watch something else. All those sequels are good, even TCM 2, they are just not delivering what I like about the first movies in those serieses.

I think the Alexandra Daddario TCM could have been good if it had a character arc for her where she starts normal but by the end she's completely deranged. Instead it ended kind of lamely for a TCM movie.

I like them equally, but they're different animals. Alien was straight horror, and Aliens was more action

Well, much like TCM 1 and 2, Alien and Aliens were different kinds of movies.  Alien was a straight up horror movie with sci-fi elements.  Aliens was a sci-fi action movie with some light horror elements.  I prefer Aliens but then I've never been that big into horror movies.  They're both good movies.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a horror classic for good reasons.  It managed to be very brutal and disturbing with very little gore or graphic violence.  It's been probably 15 years since I've seen it and I still remember the scene where a guy gets hit in the head with a large hammer and falls to the floor and you see his legs twitching from the brain injury.  No blood or guts but still so brutal.  The second movie just went completely in the opposite direction into over-the -top camp horror.  I don't know if they knew they couldn't top or even match what they did with the original and said 'screw it', or if they were just influenced by Evil Dead.  It was not a good movie, but it was fun to watch.  I mean, it's got farking Dennis Hopper dual-wielding chainsaws in a fight with Leatherface.
