Code enforcement intended to conduct lawn maintenance after complaints of high weeds and grass.

I live in a neighborhood about 2 miles from here, and used to live just 3 blocks from this spot. It's an upper-middle class neighborhood, and this is way out of character for the area. Lots of young professionals and their families live here. Sad to hear this person was having so much trouble in life. Glad nobody else was hurt.

Howdy neighbor, I am also about a mile or two from there.  I'm amazed and horrified at the amount of firepower I know is in the homes of neighbors and friends nearby.  And that's just the ones I know.

Whenever they have served notices to abate (having grass or weeds higher than 12 inches) and the owner neither cures the violation nor challenges the notice to abate:   Austin Municipal Code: Duty to Maintain Property

FTA:  "They attempted to cut the lawn for him, and this is the reaction they got," APD officer Jose Mendez said Tuesday.

When the city cuts the lawn or shovels the snow, the homeowner will be billed at $$$$/min to punish.   The APD officer makes the lawn care sound charitable.   It is not.  The director may:

(1)  expend City funds;
(2)  charge the owner for work performed by the City; and
(3)  assess the actual costs against the property.

I see city and county liens in one aspect of my job which covers all TX Counties. The ones for mowing tend to be between 75.00 and 200.00, but abandoned properties get dinged and dinged again... next thing you know they owe 5k to the County.

Also the cops don't mow, they show up to serve the warrant.

I've gotten a notice from the city before when my mower broke down mid summer.
They'll send you a fine which is usually the price of the service, utilizing cop maths.

SWAT spent "several hours" trying to contact the man inside using de-escalation techniques.

You showed up with dozens of officers and emergency vehicles plus a SWAT team, all with guns pointing at him, and now you want the dude to "de-escalate".

I recall some story about a military base painting some grass green before the arrival of a first lady?  is that related or am I crossing it with the potemkin thing?

If you refuse to cut your grass and it grows up past city regulations (which is past the point of being long and into bad for property value territory) code enforcement will give you several notices. (Same people who will fine you for stuff like leaving your trash cans out on the road).
If you still don't cut it, they will do it for you, and send you a bill.  Which I understand isn't particularly cheap. And since it's the government, you kinda need to pay it.

I always heard it was because of the General's Wife or some such.

I'm sure such stories exist in urban legend form for just about every military installation.

That kid is going to have some bruised thighs at the end of a shift.

my push mower is close to 13 years old, i know it will need to be replaced soon.

Serious question.  As a tall person, the placement of the handles for push mowers suck.  Is there a brand that does better or some kit to raise the angle up?

Here in ohio they just tack it on to the individual's property tax.  Or at least they used to do that.

Honestly never heard that happening....although now that I think of it, when I was a kid my friend's dad paid us to go weed whack his parents' rental house lawn. I wonder if he got notices. I do recall neighbors applauding us that day tho

There you go thinking all libs are the same. Some of us have even been known to not like taxes much - we just pay them. Seems to come as shock to people these days that there are people not completely superglued to one side or the other.

Code enforcement is quite lucrative.  You see, your neighbors who hate you will complain to the hotline that your yard is too high.  Bored code inspectors will paste fines on your door - every day, in some municipalities - until a certain number of weeks have passed.

Then they contract with a landscaping company to come mow everything down to the dirt.  They don't trim trees, they bulldoze them.  This service, in and of itself, is usually rather expensive for an overgrown residential yard.  The city, of course, will charge you approximately 10x that amount (from which they pay the contractor).

The real moneymaker is, of course, that just like unpaid property taxes, they're allowed to auction off your house if you don't pay the fines & the outrageous mowing bill.

Like everything goddamned else in this country, it sounds like sensible civic policy, but is actually a racket designed to take property from citizens, in actual practice.

No, this didn't happen to me.  I found out about the horror stories because my neighborhood is one of the sort where people keep that hotline on speed dial to fark over the neighbors they hate (i.e., the non-white ones).  It's disgusting. I always wondered why my darker neighbors seem to mow two or three times a friggin' week...
