But how will the private for profit prisons stay full without idiotic punitive laws being enforced?  Locking up a person for a possible  43 cents theft for 7 days in jail  and related items only cost around $5k so far.

How American that the thought occurred to give someone a felony over 43 cents. I wouldn't have bothered the police with such a petty offense. Only in our greedy society does someone goes to jail with a $50,000 dollar bond.

Disgusting.

The crime is selling a fscking 20 oz bottle of My. Dew for 2.29.  even the cheap psychological attempt to sell 2[nospam-﹫-backwards]1*50 each is too much.  I wonder when convenience stores will flat price items out of the market by pulling this shiat

Compound this with Corporations that cut pay and benefits. Why can they steal but not a poor homeless man?

This is the case that sets a precident where we all can toss money at the cashier counter and walk out, and as long as the money is equal to or more than the cost, it is totally fine.  The ONLY problem here was that the price of one Dew was more than half the price of 2 Dews.

I was assured by several farkers in the previous thread that the necessity of destroying a life for 43 cents was more a matter of principle than the actual amount.

The clerk/owner of the store must have hated him.

Understanding, no one thinks that the price for one is half the price of a "for two special", no one is that stupid, and slapping some arbitrare amount money on, and just leaving.

So yeah, douchebag.

"I feel I was treated unequally because I had a record."

Uh yeah dude, you were treated unequally for being a thief. What is it with the "I fell" shiat, this wasn't unsaid, no dog whistle, you were treated as a thief, because that's what you are.

The three strikes law is stupid of course, but he's still a thief, and due in court for another one.

Thing is, most of the time I go into these stores and I do end up buying a 40 oz mountain dew, and they're the same price as the 20 oz. And the entire rack of 20 oz is full. So I don't know what their game is, not that it really matters.

What I've always found almost comical about the pricing is that the 2 liter on the shelf (warm, granted), is basically the same price.

We are a society 100% blind to the trade-offs of convenience...

Why did this even go beyond the cashier? At every gas station I've worked at there's more than that in just one of the take-a-penny, leave a-penny trays. You usually take the silver out and put it on top of your register so someone can't take the big coins all at once. Failing that, how much of a douche do you have to be to not cover 43 cents from your pocket?

Holy making mountain out of an ant hole (not worthy of a mole hill) Batman. This is what happens when we educate to rote follow the rules instead of teaching critical thinking skills. The guy made a 43 cent mistake. At least let the dude try to make it right before going nuclear.

Sobolewski told the newspaper it was "great news" that the felony was being dismissed. "I feel I was treated unequally because I had a record."

Idiocy of this charge aside, that's what having a record means, man.  You are treated differently than a first-timer.

A long time ago I went into the brand new convenience store near me for a 2 liter coke. They were normally discounted to 99 cents. Normal price was 1.19. I think??? This place wanted 1.59. I said wut? They said the Pepsi was cheaper. I left the bottle on the counter and walked out. Never went into that one again.

I work at few days a month at a recovery center for the unhoused and seeing how some people see others as having no value no longer surprises me. The fact that heroin/ fentanyl is sold pretty openly next door makes me makes me see some people and politicians just want to keep others in pain for profit.

The trick is you take the warm dew, dump it out into fountain cups, grab the cold bottles from the fridge and fill up the 2 liter, then fill the 20oz bottles back up from the fountain cups and put them back. You now have a cold 2 liter.

IIRC this dude was a repeat offender, and was a bit of a nuisance at the store. That doesn't justify getting the police involved over 43 cents, but its an explanation. Just a crappy one.

Yep. I do some work with the homeless as well. Most of them are just mentally unwell people who need help. Some of them need help far beyond what organizations devoted to the homeless can manage.

It sounds like you work in Philly near K and A. I don't understand what is going on around K and A. For years there has been an open air heroin market thriving there and nobody can do anything to stop it.

Actually, honest legitimate stores make it clear in their signage as to if it's buy two for X price.[must buy two]  Someone times they like to make you 'think' you have to buy all five items to get the price .... while it not being the case. Period.
So. It's not ALWAYS  as you describe.

And I find it suspect that you act like that isn't the actual farking case. JFC.  WTF? How dishonest is that? Serious question 🤔
Too many jury members use this kind of suspect logic that give benefit of the doubt to accusers. But. You're supposed to give benefit of the doubt to the farking suspect, you farking tomato can!
