AT&T tried that model by selling Unix for $1 to colleges and universities.

Microsoft has been around for 40 years and still makes money hand over fist.  There is always a market for cheap, commoditized products no matter how much less aesthetically pleasing they are then Apple products.

My father still has his 1980s Unix desktop from when he was working in telecom at AT&T.  He felt that giving away UNIX was a huge mistake.  Although not as big as Lucent ignoring cell phone networks and the internet.

Windows SE locks the computer into using only Microsoft store apps and the Edge browser.  It's an attempt to take away business from Google.

Well chrome books are sorta a pain in the butt to use, but so are windows machines.

I think they might consider doing this just to get people hooked on MS Office at a young enough age.
The google suite of stuff is more or less what my kiddo has to use for everything at this point in time though.

NOBODY is stopping Google from putting their stuff in the Microsoft store.

I really wanted to love my Surface. I really did. But the damned thing would act stupidly every time there was a Windows update pending. My cursor would disappear, my network would drop in an out, audio would cut out.

Once I installed and restarted everything was golden.

That I I don't think I ever got more than like 90 minutes of use without plugging it in.

I now have a Samsung that's less wonky, if equally neglected for other reasons.
