You could just replace that with a t-shirt that says "I don't actually practice or believe in any of the tenets put forth by my stated religion" and remain just as accurate while covering much more ground.

But they do, the Bible is a book with instructions on how to own people, a book that instructs parents to put disobedient children to death, a book that glorifies rape, kidnapping, and infanticide. The moderate christians are the ones how have to ignore the vast majority of teachings in the bible.

Evangelicals are imploding.

Money quote, for people who don't feel like R'ing TFA:

"Ryan Burge of Eastern Illinois University says in a New York Times guest essay today that the reason white evangelicals have grown in recent years has more to do with the fact that it has become shorthand for MAGA cultist (my words, not his) than anything theological."

This is actually kind of interesting from a demographics of religion perspective: "Evangelical" as a group identity is becoming more popular even though that may not necessarily represent a change in overall religious practice (as defined by things like church attendance and engaging in "spiritual" behaviors) may not be changing.

I don't think I agree with Hemant's implication that the uptick in Evangelical identity doesn't really count if people are deciding to adopt the label more out of political tribalism than as a "theological" pursuit - "real evangelicals are the ones who were religious whackjobs before 2016" seems like a pretty pointless bit of hipster-flavored gatekeeping. Still, this does add some nuance to religious affiliation polling that shows Evangelicals making a comeback.

/ We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread where self-described non-religious people defend Christianity by declaring all embarrassing Christians to not be True Scotsmen Christians

I am less certain if that will be permanent.

The Bible is pervasively self-contradictory. Everyone cherry-picks the Bible. You have to, as it's literally impossible not to. It's not the cherry-picking itself that matters, but rather, what you cherry-pick.

If you reject all the compassion and charity and tolerance, you're an asshole. If you reject all the slavery and violence and authoritarianism, you might be a decent person.

Actually, Jesus put a stop to all that.

Of course, they decided that Jesus is God in the 300s, so it was his own rules he was putting a stop to.

This is why I'm pretty sure, Wicca was invented by someone from MI6 at Area 51 because the Christian Bible is too horrific to show to space aliens.

"Humans smell magic plants and collect magic rocks, if you look in their yards on a full moon, they leave the crystals out for the moon to clean them."

"Oh people are so cute, that's really cute"

Once Wicca reaches critical mass the space aliens will make contact with the people of Earth.

Like the entire Wiccan religion is advertainment for space aliens, that's my sincerely held conspiracy theory religion and it is far superior to qanon!

No joke, this is probably the best conspiracy theory I've ever heard.

"Let's see, what would extraterrestrials find non-threatening in a religion?"
"Well, for one, a religion where the beings really, really like staying in the biosphere they evolved in."
"Oh, that's good. What else?"
"Um, without any centralized hierarchy that could motivate them to take decisive collective action."
"Great. And?"
"The rituals involve being around as little technology as possible."
"...' as little technology as possible.' Got it! We'll take it from here."

Man, way to COMPLETELY elide Jewish tradition, which was hard at work incorporating and making sense of (some of) those contradictions before Jesus' stepdad was a glint in his father's eye.

// "an entire town stoning a rebellious teenager seems weird, right Akiva? in light of all these other rules and calls for mercy?"
// "yeah, Gamliel, it does - so maybe there's a bigger lesson here?"
// "interesting thought. let's explore that a bit" *15 pages of Talmud later* "ok, so if we make this about the responsibility/culpability of the kid's parents/guardians AND the entire town, it seems this section is more about 'don't let it get far enough that the whole world will want a kid dead' than it is about how to kill a teenager."
// "oh, nice! as a bonus, that also comports with a bunch of other teachings, especially one from a few chapters later ('it is not for Heaven to decide... it is not in some far away place', Deuteronomy 30:12-13)."
// "...but we should also put some insane safeguards around that rule, just in case someone tries to take it literally. and don't pretend you don't know anyone like that."
// "ok - so the parents need to warn the kid; they need to have similarly-pitched voices and be approximately the same height; the kid needs to be at least 13 but not yet have pubes or a beard (i.e. not 'a man'); needs to 'gluttonously' eat KOSHER meat and wine outside a celebratory time; neither parent can have a physical disability. anything else?"
// "I should think that covers it. no one will ever fit that bill. crisis averted!"
// all of those restrictions, by the way, come from textual analysis (and are not made up from whole cloth)
// tl;dr - taking the pan-Christian view of the Bible ignores that so, so many of these things have been discussed and (somewhat) settled in other traditions

The new testament is just as evil, from Timothy 2:12, But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence, to Jesus's parables in which he talked about slavery being part of the natural order, or Matthew 10:34, Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Then you have this passage, where jesus himself says all the old laws still apply, I could never figure out why Paul overruled jesus on that. We haven't seen Armageddon yet, so the old laws should still apply.

"Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God's law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God's laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. But I warn you-unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!" - MATTHEW 5:17-20
